Nov 12, 2011: Man kills NRI wife, packs body in a bag

PTI | Nov 12, 2011, 09.38PM IST
NEW DELHI: Their romance culminated in marriage but severe differences and strained relationship led the man murder his NRI wife of four years, squeeze her body into a trolley bag and dispose it of in Haryana.

Though Sumit Handa, the husband who had worked in several countries, tried diverting police attention by filing a complaint stating that his wife had eloped with someone, he found himself in the police net after intense probe.

In his complaint, he had also alleged that his wife, after giving him tea laced with sedatives, left his home with jewellery and cash.

The victim, 27-year-old Niranjani Pillay, was a South African passport holder and her family had migrated there long back.

Handa and Niranjani tied the knot in 2007 after a two-year-long courtship and relocated to India last year, but their marriage was under strain, police said, adding that Handa's one-year-old daughter was away from the capital during the incident.

Based on a specific information, police arrested Handa on charges of killing Niranjani and claimed that during interrogation, he had admitted to have killed his wife using a knife and laptop charger on October 29 after an altercation.

"He then kept her body in the bathroom and squeezed it in a trolley bag and dumped blood-stained clothes and other incriminating materials in another bag and asked one of his colleague to drop him in Rai in Haryana," Ashok Chand, deputy commissioner of police, Crime and Railways, said.

After getting dropped near a petrol pump in Rai, Handa carried the bags 200 meters away from the road, dumped them, poured petrol and burnt them.

"He waited for more than 2 hours and when the body was burnt he left the place. He also collected some of the ashes in a polythene bag," Chand said.

To divert police attention, the accused, police said, also sent a number of mails to his wife's e-mail id from his account asking her to come back.

"He kept telling this to his friends and he also kept searching on the net whether whether any burnt dead body had recently been recovered in Haryana," Chand said, adding that Handa had even changed the tiles in his bathroom after the murder.

Nov 10, 2011: Myanmar women stalked, assaulted in Delhi

, TNN | Nov 10, 2011, 02.03AM IST
NEW DELHI: Three women from Myanmarwere assaulted by their neighbours in west Delhi in the continuing discriminatory attacks against people from the Northeast and southeast Asia in the capital of the world's largest democracy.

Even their male friends, who tried to intervene, were not spared. The victims allege they had been stalked and teased by the local goons for several weeks before being assaulted. But the women mustered enough courage to nab one of the accused even as the other three fled.

The incident happened in the weekend at Vikaspuri, where hundreds of refugees from Myanmar lead a ghetto-like existence after fleeing the crackdown by the junta back home at Yangon. The women were attacked when one of them was waiting outside her rented accommodation to receive two female friends with a male companion. Two of the accused have been arrested.

"We arrested two of them, including the kingpin Bhupendra. A case of eve-teasing and causing hurt has been lodged against the duo. We have identified the third accused and hope to arrest him soon,'' said V Renganathan, additional CP (west).

Sources in the Vikaspuri police station said the women had earlier complained about harassment by the local residents and the matter was resolved after police intervention. "The accused said they had only asked the women to vacate their house. But the victims allege they had been stalked for over a week,'' said a senior investigating officer.

Talking to TOI, Pyinmya Than, a Myanmarese refugee, said, "We are a target of harassment. We are still viewed as foreigners despite living in the city for decasdes. We have never broken the law or done anything to hurt sentiments of residents to deserve such treatment,'' he said.

The 7000-odd refugees who have fled Myanmar over the past 22 years and are now residing in small rented accommodations in Vikaspuri , Dwarka and Janakpuri.

They believe geo-political compulsions and the compelling need to checkmate China will not allow India to oppose the military junta in Myanmar.

The low point, refugees say, came when India welcomed Myanmar's reclusive military leader Than Shwe for a state visit in July this year.

Call centre worker sets pregnant wife on fire

Mid-Day.com, Updated: Nov 10, 2011 12:34 IST
Mumbai: A call centre employee allegedly set his wife ablaze in Malwani on Tuesday night. She was eight-months pregnant.

The victim, Sadhna Sonawane (26), has sustained 90 per cent burns and is reported to be in a critical condition.

Malwani cops have revealed that the couple would frequently be embroiled in severe altercations.

Two years ago, Sadhna had married Sunil (35), who works as a peon in a Malad-based call centre. Sunil had reportedly taken to a depraved lifestyle ever since he started working for the firm. He would spend beyond his means, blowing off all his money on alcohol, nights out in pubs and discotheques, and illicit affairs.

According to Malwani cops, Sunil had even stopped contributing from his salary for household expenses. To make ends meet, his wife would have to work as a domestic help.

Uncomfortable with his wife stepping out of the house every day, Sunil would doubt her fidelity, and would physically abuse her, on a regular basis.

Sadhna, who had almost carried the baby to full term, had complained of Sunil's abusive ways many times to her brother Babu Kakde, who lives in Aurangabad. Concerned, Kakde had offered to come down to Mumbai and take her away with him to Aurangabad. He arrived in the city yesterday, only to learn that his sister had been set on fire by her husband.

"I had no idea that I would be greeted with this horrifying news. I should have taken her away before," said Kakde.

"On Tuesday night, Sunil came home drunk, and picked a fight with Sadhna over a trivial issue. In a fit of rage, he poured kerosene over Sadhna and set her on fire. Seeing his wife engulfed by flames, Sunil panicked, and began to run. Sadhna followed him for a short distance, but then collapsed," said A R Shaikh, senior police inspector of Malwani police station.

Horrified by the sight of a woman running even as flames devoured her, neighbours splashed buckets of water on her to douse the fire. Sadhna was then rushed to the Bhagwati Hospital. The police have launched a manhunt for the absconding Sunil, who has been charged with attempted murder.

The couple had married two years ago, after Sunil's first wife died from a prolonged illness.

Nov 7, 2011: Paternity test for 13-yr-old rape suspect in Pune

Mid-Day.com, Updated Nov 7, 2011 12:53 IST

After MiD DAY reported inaction of authorities in the case of 13-year-old who was raped and impregnated, officials from Women and Child Welfare Department say DNA of foetus would be crossmatched with teen boy suspected of raping victim to ascertain if he fathered child
AFTER MiD DAY pointed out last week that no action had been taken after the rape and impregnation of a 13-year-old girl at the Vidyavati Ashram in Kamshet surfaced, District Women And Child Welfare Officer Suvarna Pawar said yesterday that a non-cognizable offence would be registered against the trustees of the orphanage.
Varsha Gaikwad, minister in Women And Child Welfare department, assured MiD DAY that the DNA of the fetus would be crossmatched with that of the 13-year-old boy who is suspected of raping the teen girl. This would confirm if the baby is fathered by the suspect or the girl’s pregnancy was a result of abuse by some adult person.
Officials from the Women and Child Development Department (DWCD) announced the constitution of an inquiry committee comprising a gynaecologist, a child right activist, two members of an NGO and members from the Child Welfare Committee.
In the meantime, all children, including 19 boys and 26 girls, would be shifted to other children homes till the situation at the ashram is back to normal. “I have instructed all my officers that medical test be conducted on all children to affirm if they too were abused,” said Gaikwad.
It has been noted that the Vidyavati Ashram in Kamshet is guilty of serious violation, as its licence had expired in 2010, said officials from the DWCD. An officer from the District Women and Child Welfare Department said the ashram had put up a file for renewal. More importantly, there were only two home mothers and one superintendent to take care of more than 50 children, including the 13-year-old rape victim.
United Nations Health Task Force Representative for South Asia Dr Yamini Adbe paid a visit to the orphanage and said the records were poorly maintained. The staff members told her that all children were aware that the 13-year-old resident had missed her periods. “This revelation by the staff members is enough to show that 50 children were exposed to disturbing environment,” said Dr Adbe.

Nov 6, 2011: Woman burns mother to death for property, arrested

Indo-Asian News Service, Updated: Nov 6, 2011 17:09 IST
Jodhpur: A woman was arrested for burning her 65-year-old widowed mother to death for taking control of her property in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur city, police said Saturday.
Kalpana Devi, who separated from her husband seven years ago, bolted her mother Sandhya Rani inside their house in Shastri Nagar and set it on fire before escaping Nov 1.
“Kalpana was arrested from Udaipur and was brought to Jodhpur Saturday morning,” said a police officer.
Soon after the house was set on fire, their neighbours found Sandhya Rani with burns and rushed her to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries Friday, police said.
Police initially investigated the case thinking it to be a fire sparked by an electrical short-circuit, but were shocked to find later that the victim’s daughter murdered her for her property in the city, some 290 km from state capital Jaipur.
“Kalpana was living with her mother in Shastri Nagar. Her mother, a widow, owned another house at a prime location here,” the officer said.
He added that Kalpana wanted to sell the house which was being opposed by her mother. “Irked over this, Kalpana plotted the murder,” said the officer.
