BANGALORE: Sexual, physical and emotional abuse of girl child has always been talked about. But a survey conducted by a non-government organization (NGO) has revealed that abuse of school-going girls is a rampant phenomenon in the city.
The survey conducted by Child Rights and You (CRY) between August and September this year in the slums of Madiwala has revealed that 44% parents agreed that girl children were abused in schools, whereas 46% of them said that girl children were abused while on their way to school.
The survey was part of a "Rapid Assessment of Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) on 'prevalence of barriers to girl child education among lower income groups of society'. Ninty-six households each were surveyed in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Bangalore cities for the survey.
The Bangalore leg of the survey conducted in the Madiwala slums found that 80% respondents (parents) were unaware of the schemes floated exclusively for girls in the state. About 47% felt that education was not free in India as they had to pay up for transportation, books, stationery etc.
The survey also found out that 23% respondents felt that if there was a younger sibling at home, a girl should take care of the sibling instead of going to school. While 67% respondents reported that girls should get married earlier than boys, 40% admitted that school going girls were indeed getting married in their locality. About 59% parents felt that transportation was not safe for the girl children.
""We are recommending the government to ensure better infrastructure facilities especially separate toilets for girls, improved and safe transportation facilities and a proactive environment within the schools to prevent abuse/exploitation. Adequate number of qualified and trained woman teachers as this help to improve girl's access to school and their retention,"" said Regina Thomas, regional director, CRY.
Whose right is it anyway?
74% respondents in Bangalore did not know about Right to Education was a fundamental right of the child.
50% respondents across the country parents did not know about RTE.
40% respondents admitted that they knew about children in their locality who were of school going age but yet were not attending any school.
