Jan 4, 2013: Girl gang-raped, killed in Kanpur Dehat

KANPUR: As the outrage over the wave of crime against women grows in the country, in yet another horrific incident a minor girl was allegedly gang raped and murdered in Kanpur Dehat late on Wednesday night. The perpetrators of the crime dumped the body in the mustard fields close to her house and escaped.

Reports said Nisha (name changed), daughter of Habib Ali, disappeared mysteriously from her house at Sithaumathana village under the limits of Rasoolabad police station on Thursday night. "The girl, a student of class XI at Shiv Inter College at Tidhuva in Auraiyya district, was last seen sleeping in her room," the police said. The body of the deceased was later found lying in the mustard fields early on Thursday morning.

Local people, who saw the girl's body, informed her family members who in turn alerted the police.

Tension ran high as the news of gang rape spread in the village. The police rushed to the spot and after conducting preliminary investigation, sent the body for post-mortem examination.

The police, on the basis of a complaint made by the deceased's father, lodged a named FIR against five accused, Usman, Govind Singh, Askaran, Salim and Irfan. "A massive search is underway to nab the accused," said Kanpur Dehat SP Ram Kishun.

"All the accused, who are in the age group of 20 to 25 years as per the kin of the girl, used to stalk the victim regularly. They also threatened the victim's family members on being challenged," the police said.

The victims family has claimed that the girl was gang raped and murdered, the local police said, "Rape will be confirmed after the post-mortem report. We have to conduct further investigations before confirming if it was a case of rape and murder," said Rasoolabad police official.
