JAISALMER: The Rajasthan High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail application of Banne Singh, who was arrested recently on charges of killing his girl child.
Justice Sandeep Mehta rejected the bail plea of Singh, who was booked under Sections 302 and 201 of IPC. This was the first reported case in which the father was arrested for killing his daughter, though NGOs and local reports suggest that the practice was rampant among a few communities in the region.
Singh was booked on January 26 this year after the FSL report confirmed that his child died as insecticide was given to her. He was arrested on January 28.
According to the case diary, on March 30, 2011, Gulab Kanwar, wife of Banne Singh, a resident of Devda village, delivered a healthy baby girl at Government Jawahir Hospital. At the time of birth, the girl weighed 2.5kg. But, even before doctors could conduct the routine check-up next day, the family took away the child and wrote a message saying they were taking the newborn and her mother and did not want any benefit out of the Janani Suraksha Scheme or any other government scheme.
The neighbours suspected that the newborn girl was killed, so they called the then district collector Giriraj Singh Kushwaha and expressed their doubt over murder of the newborn. The collector immediately sent the then deputy SP Pahad Singh and SDM Ramesh Chandra Agarwal along with a medical team to Devda village. Before the team could reach there, the newborn had been buried. The officials exhumed the body, conducted post-mortem and sent the viscera of the dead child for FSL investigation at Jaipur. The FSL report suggested the girl had been poisoned to death.
Kotwali police station in-charge, circle inspector Virendra Singh said that the girl had been killed by her family members and FSL report confirmed it. Singh said that the FSL report was received a few days ago in which the reason of death was poisoning by 'Oregenro Chlorophosphate'. "This is first time that we have evidence based on which arrest was made," said the police officer.
