Chowdhary, a widower, stayed with his three children, the victim, a 12-year-old daughter and a 10-year-old son in a room in a slum in Dahisar in north Mumbai. His wife had passed away in 2005.

The victim recently got in touch with a child welfare activist in her area and narrated her story to him. According to the complaint, Chowdhary had raped her on several occasions since 2009 and had threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it.

He also impregnated her in 2010, following which he forced her to terminate the pregnancy. The last time he raped her was in April year, Pirjade said.

A case has been registered against Chowdhary under sections 376 ( rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
