CHANDIGARH: A man who allegedly attempted to sexually harass an under-cover woman cop in a CTU bus was arrested near PGI on Monday. Police said, Mahinder, who is a mechanic, started making obscene gestures towards the woman cop, in a CTU bus on way from Sector 17 and to the PGI.
The accused, Mahinder Singh of Sector 25, allegedly tried to molest the woman cop. Two other women cops, who were part of the exercise, recorded Mahinder's gestures on her cell phone and submitted to the area police station Sector 11. Later a case was registered against Mahinder in the Sector 11 police station. He was arrested and a case registered against him at the Sector 11 police station.
Police had recently constituted three teams comprising women and male cops under the supervision of sub-inspector and inspector level officers in three police divisions of Chandigarh police for tackling cases of sexual harassment.
Sub-inspector (SI) Sarita Devi, head of the central division team, said, "Each team comprises three women cops and one male head constable, who work in plain clothes. The team members have been especially directed to keep a special watch at bus stops near schools, colleges, bus stands and in CTU buses."
Police sources said all evidence including video-clippings of people involved in sexual harassment and photographs would be uploaded on the web page of the Chandigarh police, which would be created soon. There are have been other cases of sexual harassment too.
Ram Kumar of Sector 18 was arrested for allegedly sexually harassing girls in Sector 8 on Sunday night. Two unidentified youths were also booked for harassing girls near ISBT-17. The youths managed to escape, when girls raised an alarm.
Over two dozen youths were booked and arrested for sexually harassing girls in the city, including passing obscene remarks against them in the last one fortnight.
