GREATER NOIDA: The husband of a 23-year old woman whose body was found brutally battered last week near the railway tracks in Kasna area of Greater Noida has been taken in police custody. Cops said the second accused in the alleged dowry death, the husband's brother and two other unknown persons, are still at large. Meanwhile, villagers and relatives of the dead woman staged a dharna at the district collectorate to demand swifter action. The DM assured them that the guilty will be brought to book.

Police said the husband of the deceased Renu was apprehended from Hodal in Haryana on Monday morning. "Narender has been taken into custody and we are interrogating him," said Brijesh Kumar, circle officer, Greater Noida and Dankaur. Cops had been raiding the residences of Narender and his relatives in Palwal and Haryana since the day of the murder.

"We are looking out for the other accused also trying to ascertain the motive for the brutal murder," an officer said. Renu was discovered naked in Greater Noida on Thursday morning near the Maycha railway crossing.

Though police said that vaginal swabs from the autopsy have confirmed that no rape had taken place before Renu was murdered, relatives and residents of the village said that "the post mortem report states that Renu was gang-raped". Refuting the claims of the relatives, police officers maintained that there had been "no rape'. "Renu was four-months pregnant at the time of her death but she had not been raped," Kumar said.

Meanwhile, voices of dissent in Fazayalpur and several surrounding villages continue to get louder. Even as hundreds of villagers held a Panchayat on Sunday, they once again convened at the Greater Noida district collectorate on Monday. "The DM and SSP have assured us that they will take suitable action. We decided to end our protest today after that," said Gyan Chand Sharma, a villager.
