SAMBALPUR: A three-year-old girl was found raped and murdered in Sambalpur district on Sunday. The incident came on the heels of a similar crime against a seven-year-old in September and the ninth rape of minor girls in the district within two months.
Police said the girl had been missing from her home at a village in Sambalpur district's Thelkolei police station area since Saturday. After failing to find her, the girl's father had lodged a missing report with police the same day.
According to police, the girl's parents used to leave her to the care of her four-year-old brother when they went out to work as cow hawkers. The girl's brother told his parents that she had gone out with a youth identified as Thuru Munda (26), who used to visit their house. "We conducted a search, but the accused youth was absconding. This made it difficult for us to trace the victim. But finally we recovered her body from a secluded place in a nearby jungle. We have sent it for autopsy. From the condition of the body, we suspect she was raped before being strangulated," SP (Sambalpur) Nikhil Kanodia said. "We have launched a manhunt to catch the accused."
The rape of the minor girl comes on the heels of a series of such crimes that has shocked Sambalpur district. On October 5, a high school student was kidnapped by a youth in Khetrajpur area. Police traced them both in Balangir and registered a rape case against the youth.
Earlier on September 30, two minor girls were raped in Khetrajpur and Sadar police station areas. The accused in the first case was a minor. On September 24, a minor girl was raped by a boy in Hirakud police station area. Police arrested the accused and produce him in a juvenile court.
There were three similar cases reported in September. On September 20, a minor girl was raped by her cousin in Jujomora area. The accused was arrested and produced in a juvenile court. Earlier on September 9, a high school girl was raped by a her class mate in Kuchinda area. The accused was arrested and taken to a juvenile court. On September 2, seven-year-old girl was kidnapped, raped and murdered. A fast track court convicted a youth for the crime.
