MUMBAI: A youth repeatedly slashed the face of a teenaged girl when she objected to him ogling her. The attack had disfigured the girl's face and her family was too poor to afford a plastic surgery to restore her looks, the police said.
Arrested on Sunday, the accused, Waris Qureshi, has been booked for criminal intimidation and causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons.
The incident occurred at Juhu Galli in Andheri (W) on Saturday when the victim—who stayed in Juhu Galli and worked at an imitation jewellery unit—went to a public telephone booth to make a call. While on phone, she reportedly noticed Qureshi standing nearby and staring at her. When she confronted him, the youth apparently denied ogling her. Following an altercation, the girl went back to the phone. As she was about to leave, Qureshi took out a blade and slashed her face several times.
Alarmed by her screams, passersby rushed to her rescue and took her home; some also beat up Qureshi but he managed to flee. The girl's family took her to Cooper Hospital where the doctors said she had sustained deep gashes on her cheeks and lips for which she received stitches. After being discharged from hospital, the victim lodged a police complaint.
The girl told the police she did not know Qureshi, but she had seen him in the neighbourhood. The D N Nagar police learnt that Qureshi lived in Dharavi and often visited his relatives at Juhu Galli. On inquiring with the relatives, they traced him to Dharavi on Sunday. After being brought to the police station, when Qureshi saw the girl sitting there, he started threatening her. The police said Qureshi did odd-jobs for a living. They are investigating if he had a criminal past.
