MUMBAI: A 32-year-old restaurant employee was arrested on Tuesday on charges of repeatedly raping a seven-year-old girl over the last few months after luring her to his hutment in Sahar's Sai Nagar with chocolates or the promise to pet the rabbits he kept when she used to go for tuition.

Shashikant Ojha was caught in his shanty on Tuesday morning after the girl finally opened up and booked for rape and criminal intimidation. The police are awaiting the medical reports of the victim and the accused.

"Ojha last committed the offence on January 4. Before leaving her alone, he threatened to slit her throat if she disclosed anything," said a Sahar police station officer.

Thanks to Ojha's threats, the Class II student was under severe stress but remained tightlipped. "On Monday night, she suddenly screamed 'Woh kaka, kaka...' in her sleep and woke up crying. When her parents asked her why she was scared, she kept quiet. But they realized not all was fine," said deputy commissioner of police (Zone 8) N D Chavan.

On Tuesday morning, the victim's parents counselled her, assured her of her safety and asked what made her cry out the night before. The child finally came out with the terrible truth and the parents approached the police. "On Tuesday morning, after we counselled her, she gathered courage and spoke out about the trauma she had been undergoing for the last 3-4 months," said her parents in their complaint.

The girl told them that she didn't know the name of the 'kaka' who had lured her to his hut, barely 100 feet from her home, also in Sai Nagar, for three-four times while she used to go for tuitions. But she offered to direct them to the hutment on a narrow bylane that passed next to a hotel on the main road at Sai Nagar. The accused stayed in a hovel behind the hotel where he was employed.

"The victim said after taking her to his house, the accused undressed her and misbehaved with her. We are probing whether Ojha was involved in a similar offence in the past," said Sahar police inspector Balasaheb Jadhav.

DCP Chavan said the case has been assigned to a woman inspector to encourage the victim to talk about her travails over the last few months.
