Aug 2, 2011: Girl lured, raped by gym manager

NEW DELHI: A 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a gym manager on the pretext of giving her a job.

The accused Navin, a resident of Rohini, has been arrested . A medical examination of the victim has confirmed rape.
A case under IPC sections 366 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) has been registered in this regard at theRohini North police station.

The incident was reported on Sunday morning from the Pitampura area in northwest Delhi.

According to P Karunakaran , additional DCP (outer ), the girl, a resident of Nangloi in west Delhi, had completed a course as a dietician and was looking for employment .

"The girl had met Navin several times. He had promised to give get her a job at his gym that was located in Rohini sector 8. On Sunday, the accused called the girl over to his office and after asking her a few questions, asked her to accompany him to Pitampura. Navin told the girl that his boss stays there and it is he who would take the final decision,'' said Karunakaran. Police sources said that after the victim arrived at the flat in Pitampura, the accused allegedly raped her. The girl later narrated the entire incident to her parents before she went to the police station and filed a complaint.

The cops raided the Rohini residence of the accused later and arrested him.

This is the second incident in two months of a woman being raped inside a gym complex. The first instance was reported from the Dwarka subcity area.

Around 80 rape cases have been reported in the capital so far this year.

In 2010, the city witnessed 489 rape incidents, including the infamous Dhaula Kuan rape and Mongolpuri, as against 459 cases in 2009. The figures for 2006 was 609 followed by a drop to 581 next year while in 2008 it further dipped to 466.

Molestation cases in the city have followed a similar trajectory but it showed an increase this year at 585 compared to last year's 532.

While there were 597 cases in 2008, there were 835 incidents in 2007 and 713 in 609. In over 90 per cent of cases, the accused were known to victims.
