RAJKOT: Two cases of acid attacks on women by jilted lovers have come to light from Junagadh district. One of the victims is a minor. The attacks were reported from Sutrapada and Talala talukas of the district. While the police have arrested one of the attackers, the second one is yet to be nabbed.

In the first instance police arrested Bhaga Vanvi for throwing acid on his 17-year-old girl friend in Kadsala village of Sutrapada taluka.

Sources said that Bhaga was in love with the minor girl but it was a one-sided affair. He resided in the same village as the girl and used to send her SMSs on her mobile. Both belong to the dalit community. When the girl ignored him and refused to have any relationship with him, the accused, in a fit of fury, went to her residence late at night on May 6 and allegedly threw acid while she was asleep.

He fled from the spot after attacking her. The girl sustained severe burn injuries on her face and chest. She was rushed to a hospital in Kodinar.

In the second instance, 26-year-old Rahemat Gameti of Veraval village sustained burn injuries when her former boyfriend Majid Sama of Vadal village in Talala taluka threw acid on her on Thursday.

The attack was carried out near Hadmatiya village when Rahemat was going to her parent's house in Vadal village.

"Majid intercepted the rickshaw in which Rahemat was traveling and forced her to get down. He beat her up and threw acid on her," said a police official.

Sources said that Rahemat had got married to Merubhai Sama in Veraval few years ago. She had come to visit her parents and had gone to Hadmatiya village to purchase mangoes where she met her former lover Majid.

Majid asked her to marry him which she refused following which he attacked her.
