Edited by Shamik Ghosh | Updated: January 27, 2013 09:23 IST
Tonk: A woman from Tonk in Rajasthan allegedly sold her 11-year-old daughter for Rs. 6 lakh to a couple, who wanted to traffic her for prostitution. The child, however, managed to escape and went to the police for help.

The police have now found the document in which the woman agreed to hand over her daughter for Rs. 6 lakhs.

"We recovered papers from the girl and it's clearly written that the mother has sold her daughter to Santra and Tarachand in Kanjar basti for Rs. 6 and a half lakh. She took Rs. 2 lakh from them on the December 16 and Rs. 4 lakh was to be given over the period of the next two months," said Rakesh Verma , Assistant Sub-Inspector  of the Anti-Human Trafficking cell.
The child is currently at a nari niketan shelter.

The girl's mother, Rajrani, and the couple, who bought her, have been arrested by the anti-human trafficking cell and are in police custody.

Rajrani, a widow, claims she was being pressurised by her community panchayat to pay fines and to collect money she had 'mortgaged' her daughter.

"No, I did not sell her. I took Rs. 2 lakh from him but I gave it back," she claims.

Jan 12, 2013: Chhattisgarh girls' hostel superintendent arrested for forcing minor girl into sex acts

By , TNN | Jan 12, 2013, 02.40 PM IST
RAIPUR: Within days after sensational case of sexual assault on minor girls at a tribal hostel came to light in Kanker district, another case of similar nature has surfaced in Chhattisgarh. Police arrested a woman superintendent of a girls' ashram for allegedly forcing a minor girl into sex acts with her friend. Police is now trying to find out whether any other girls had fell victim to similar acts.

The matter came to light after a girl brought the matter to the notice her parents, who in turn reported the matter to the Dondi police station. They also complained to the Gondwana samaj, a local body of tribes' community.

Dondi police station in-charge K K Kushwaha said a case has been registered against girl's hostel superintendent Anita Thakur and another person, identified as Chotu, on the complaint of the girl concerned and both of them have been arrested. Charges of rape, house trespass in order to commit offence punishable with life imprisonment, criminal intimidation, wrongful confinement and other provisions of IPC were slapped on them.

Both the hostel superintendent and another person were later presented before a court at Durg, which remanded them to judicial custody.

The girl concerned as their family members were running from pillar to post to get a complaint registered in connection with the sexual assault on her that took place in 2008 when she was studying in class eight. The complaint said she was pushed into a room inside the girls' hostel where the accused Chotu was present but she kept quiet for long because of fear.

However, she told her parents about the incident few months ago, who apprised the community leaders. Subsequently, they complained to the police but the probe did not progress further because of the Thakur's high connections.

Amid raging controversy over the Kanker sexual exploitation case, the Godnwana community leaders approached the police again, alleging that unknown people were frequenting the girls' hostel under the patronage of the hostel superintendent and demanding action on the basis of the girls' complaint.

Sensing trouble, the police promptly arrested Anita Thakur and produced her in the court and are now talking about interviewing all girls staying in the hostel to record their statements.

On January 10, this hostel superintendent was felicitated by chief minister Raman Singh as "best superintendent" during his visit to Balod to attend the first foundation day function of the district. Gondwana community leaders alleged that she enjoyed considerable clout in the administration and among other influential people.

Expressing serious concern over the second incident sexual exploitation in government run girls' hostel, opposition Congress spokesman Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said his party leaders had already demanding instituting a judicial inquiry to probe the state of affairs of all girls' hostels and ashrams.

Nov 2, 2012: F1 gone, foreign 'prostitutes' stay on

, TNN | Nov 2, 2012, 02.03AM IST
NEW DELHI: The F1 circus has moved on leaving behind tourists, some of them of the unwelcome kind. Delhi Police sources say a number of foreign prostitutes used the recent F1 race as a pretext to get tourist visas and are now plying their trade in the city. Among them are some who were caught earlier for prostitution and evicted from the country.

The crime branch is learnt to have sent a list of all such women to the Delhi home department, the Union ministry of home affairs and the foreigner regional registration offices (FRRO), requesting that visas not be issued to them in future. Last year, the crime branch had busted four sex rackets around the F1 season. At least two gangs involved foreign nationals.

"We have found that the same girls are returning to the city to earn money. We want to ensure that, once sent out of India, they are not allowed in again without a background check,'' said a senior officer who is monitoring these cases.

However, foreign policy experts say this decision will lead to an unnecessary row of the kind witnessed some time ago when women in the CIS countries protested against being generally labelled prostitutes and denied visa by Indian authorities. "The Indian authorities should deal with the issue case by case,'' said an expert from JNU.

This time, the Special Investigation Team of crime branch has reportedly busted a gang of CIS nationals who earned more than Rs 5 lakh a month by joining sex rackets with bases in south Delhi, Goa and Mumbai. Six women aged 23-28 were caught but investigators believe other women from the group are still active in Delhi.

The pimp for the group reportedly married an Indian to remain in India and has spent three years in the city. "The accused paid a rent of Rs 50,000 in GK-II, and Rs 30,000 each in Arjun Nagar and Safdarjung Enclave. The main accused has proper records with entries from 2009. We now have all the details about the movement of these call girls and how much they charge. They earn Rs 4-5 lakh a month,'' said a source.

Sources said the group has learnt to evade police by soliciting directly through social networking sites and phones. They also don't involve Indian pimps or prostitutes to avoid sharing their profits. One of the accused, an Uzbek ballet dancer, allegedly charged more than Rs 50,000 a night after moving to the city from Dubai for better earnings.

PTI | Oct 30, 2012, 08.35PM IST
JAJPUR: The uncle of a woman was among four persons arrested today from a village in Odisha for allegedly forcing her into prostitution in Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The 25-year-old woman of Kharamangi village in Jajpur district of Odisha was married to Prakash Kabir Das of Chausath village in Uttar Pradesh on October 03, 2012. Her uncle Gopal Khuntia and one Bhagabat Sahu negotiated the marriage.

Soon after the marriage, Prakash took the bride to his native village in UP along with the two negotiators. He then allegedly forced her into prostitution before selling her to one Suraj Pal for Rs 10,000 in the presence of her uncle and another relative.

Suraj also allegedly forced her into prostitution.

In her bid to escape from the situation, the woman told Suraj that a LIC policy in her name had matured and the amount was estimated over Rs 50,000.

To collect the policy bond from her parental house, both came to the village on Monday.

After reaching the village, the woman narrated her plight to her parents and angry locals locked up Suraj and his friend in a room.

They also caught Bhagabat Sahu, Gopal Khuntia and Raju Sahu who assisted Suraj in the crime. Later, the four persons were handed over to police.

"We have arrested the four persons in this case," said Deepak Kumar Superintendent of Police of Jajpur.

However, police was yet to arrest the woman's husband. A team of police would proceed to UP soon to arrest others involved in the crime, the SP said.

Oct 18, 2012: Teen pushed into flesh trade rescued, parents arrested

TNN | Oct 18, 2012, 01.47AM IST
NEW DELHI: She was forced into prostitution by her greedy parents who made good money by selling her to various pimps. However, the 15-year-old girl managed to escape from the trafficker's clutches and hid at a shelter in western UP. When she couldn't be found, her parents sought the help of police to trace her. Little did they know that the move would land them in the police net. The teenager has been rescued from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh.

The girl's father, who supplies vegetables at the wholesale market in Ghazipur, was under debt after suffering a loss in business. He had recently brought the girl to the capital from his native village, on the promise of providing her with better educational facilities. She had barely adjusted to life in the big city when her parents made her meet a pimp, Ravinder Singh, involved in several cases of trafficking across three states.

Realizing that her parents were forcing her into the flesh trade, the girl made three attempts to run away from her north Rohini residence. Each time, she was caught and beaten up by her father. "The victim told us that even her mother beat her up. She attended to clients every night and the money was shared by the pimp and her parents. As money started flowing in, her parents' greed increased. They ordered her to stay at a brothel run by Ravinder," said DCP (outer) B S Jaiswal.

Ravinder took the girl to Moradabad and handed her over to another pimp, Shanno, who then sold her to a person named Sachin Rastogi, who belongs to Sambhal. Last month, the minor finally found an opportunity to run away.

When she couldn't be traced, her mother lodged a missing person's complaint at the North Rohini police station on September 29. Assuming it to be a case of kidnapping, cops launched a search operation. "The parents thought that after finding the girl we will send her back to them and they will again push her into prostitution," said Jaiswal. The victim will be produced before a Child Welfare Committee. Her parents, Ravinder, Shanno and Sachin have been arrested.

NEW DELHI: An alleged international prostitution racket, being run from the posh Greater Kailash Part-II area of South-East Delhi, was today busted and seven persons, including three Uzbek women were arrested.

"Three Uzbek nationals, their three customers Mohammed Imran, Sem Ahmed and Sahjad Khan -- all resident of walled city area -- and one Raju Paswan, working as a carrier, were arrested," a senior police official said.

According to police, the three Uzbek women, aged between 21 and 25 years, were living in a rented accommodation in GK-II without valid travel documents.

"The main person behind the racket was one Ajay alias Jaat, a Haryana resident, and was staying in Delhi for past three-four years. He allegedly used to facilitate the visit and stay of foreign national girls in Delhi on tourist visa," said Ajay Choudhary, ACP South East District.

He had been operating the international flesh trade in Delhi and the NCR region since the past three years.

Ajay used to arrange clients for the girls and charged between Rs 4,000 and Rs 8,000. He used to charge heavily for belly dancing, weekend parties and travel companions to various destinations like Shimla, Jaipur and Goa.

Aug 30, 2012: Alert taxi driver foils husband’s bid to sell wife

TNN | Aug 30, 2012, 04.01AM IST
KOLKATA: An alert cabbie claimed to have saved a woman from being sold in a brothel, allegedly by her husband, on Wednesday. Police are interrogating the woman, her husband and mother at the Hare Street police station. However, the officials are in a dilemma after the bride's mother came and rescued her son-in-law, saying that he cannot even think of doing such a thing.

Sources said the couple reached Howrah station from their Hooghly home on Wednesday morning and boarded a shuttle taxi. While the girl sat on the rear seat, the husband, later identified as Shyamal Soren, sat on the front seat. Two more passengers were also in the taxi.

As the taxi was moving along the Howrah Bridge, Soren allegedly whispered into the cabbie's ears, saying: "Where can girls be sold here?" The cabbie, Dipu Malik, reportedly said that it would take Rs 250 to reach there. "Soren agreed to pay the sum. Two other passengers got down from the taxi at Shakespeare Sarani. The cabbie first took them to Dorina Crossing, where he found an outdoor broadcasting (OB) van of a news channel. But he found none in the OB van. Then he took the couple near the Writers' Buildings," said sources.

The cabbie then raised an alarm and the police personnel on duty there came rushing. On the basis of the complaint by the cabbie, the couple was taken to the officer-in-charge of Writers' Buildings. Later, Hare Street police station was informed. The couple and the cabbie were taken to the police station, said an officer.

Interrogation revealed that the couple, who got married only three months ago, was coming from Chanditala in Hooghly. Both of them used to work there. On Wednesday morning, Soren and his wife had left for Howrah en-route to Gangarampur, where Soren's family members live. From Howrah, the couple was supposed to go to Sealdah station and from there they were to board a Gangarampur-bound train.

The mother of the woman also reached the police station after being informed by the officials. But at Hare Street police station, she gave a different opinion about her son-in-law. She said Soren could not do something like that. The cabbie must have misunderstood his words. According to police, the cabbie stood by his statement. Soren, on the other hand, pleaded ignorance. Police will interrogate him again.

Aug 30, 2012: Teacher accused of pushing girl into flesh trade

, TNN | Aug 30, 2012, 04.05AM IST
BIHARSHARIF: A school teacher in his 50s who not only commanded the respect of parents of children who went to his school but also of the entire neighborhood for his good behavior was assaulted by the same people and handed over to police on Tuesday evening when a girl of the locality, who returned home 12 years after she went missing, threw a bombshell that the revered teacher had abducted her and sold her to a brothel owner at Muzaffarpur. She went missing at the tender age of 9.
Daughter of poor parents, Puja Kumari (name changed) had gone missing from Malahbigha locality of Islampur town in Nalanda district some 12 years ago when she was barely 9. The poor parents frantically searched for their daughter but to no avail. They, then, lodged a 'missing' complaint of the minor girl with Islampur PS but with the passage of time, they lost all hope of their daughter ever returning home.
Luck turned for them two days ago when two days back, a young man who identified himself as Manoj Sah from Muzaffarpur visited the unfortunate parents and took them for the identification of the girl who, he said, claimed to be their daughter. The parents did not believe their eyes when they found their daughter alive after so many years.
Puja told the police she was abducted by a teacher of a primary school of the locality, Qasim Ahmad, who kept her confined in a house in Nabinagar village under Ekangarsarai PS area of Nalanda district for two months before selling her in the red light area in Muzaffarpur where she was physically and emotionally exploited for years. She claimed to have married the informant of her parents, Manoj Sah, some three years ago and had a child from him who, she said, is in the teacher's custody. She has also named the teacher's wife, Chanda Khatoon, their daughter Rehana and son-in-law Munna Mian as having conspired for taking her child.
The other accused have not been arrested as the police said it is a matter of investigation but the disgraced teacher was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday.

Jul 05, 2012: Police to start campaign against sex rackets: Jaipur

TNN | Jul 5, 2012, 01.50AM IST
JAIPUR: After busting a prostitution racket on Monday, in which five girls had sent an SMS to the police claiming they had been abducted and forced into prostitution, the senior authorities of the Jaipur police commissionerate, especially the crime branch, has geared up to launch a campaign against hotels involved in these rackets.
It, however, seems to be an eye wash since in the above-mentioned case the arrested manager, who was running the racket, had alleged that he was paying a hefty commission to the Harmara police station.
The girls, who were brought from Kolkata and Mumbai, were forced into prostitution and were kept hostage at Hotel Raj Inn on Sikar Road.
"We got an SMS from these girls in which they had given the address of the hotel where they had been confined. A team raided the hotel and found five girls. Though the girls were booked under PITA (Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act), 1956, the owner of the hotel was booked for abduction and under other sections of IPC," said Raghuveer Saini, additional deputy commissioner of police (crime), on Wednesday.
Police said that it was an alarming case of prostitution. "Earlier, the agents of these girls used to choose colonies like Vidhyadhar Nagar, Sodala, Jhotwara and Mansarover where they ran the rackets in rented accommodations. But now they are opting for the budget hotels," said a senior police officer.
"Now, there is a new trend where the agents directly supply girls on weekly or fortnightly basis. The managers and owners of the hotels are promised hefty commission plus a big percentage of the money earned by the girls," Saini added.
Taking cognizance of the incident, the crime branch of Jaipur police has decided to conduct 'surprise raids' at the city hotels, especially at the budget hotels, in the city.
"Since Sunday, we have been conducting surprise raids. Under the campaign, some of the hotels in which these activities were found would also be checked," said BL Soni, commissioner of police.
On the contrary, the arrested manager had also alleged that that he was paying a hefty commission to the hotel to run the racket.
"The police station got its new circle inspector merely a week ago. The hotel is in the area for the past two years. It was found there was some connivance of the police station in the case. Action would be taken against those involved in facilitating these hotels in running such rackets," Soni added.
It may be recalled that Jaipur police on Monday had found five girls allegedly involved in prostitution in a hotel and the manager of the hotel was arrested on charges of abduction.

TNN | Jun 16, 2012, 12.49AM IST
NAGPURLakadganj police on Wednesday evening rescued a bruised and battered 16-year-old victim of human trafficking from city's notorious red-light locality Ganga Jamuna. The girl, a native of Kota in Rajasthan, was sold to the flesh trade racket for Rs 10,000. In city's brothel, she was forced to entertain clients or else starve and face torture.
Her parents, in connivance with flesh trade racketeers from red-light locality, had sent the girl into prostitution. Police have registered an offence against the parents Babarao Chaitrawat and Munnibai along with a woman identified as Jantabai, after recording statement of the girl. Shockingly, the girl was told by her parents 'to work hard' when she was leaving for Nagpur with Jantabai who paid the money to parents.
The two-month ordeal of the girl came to an end in a rather dramatic way after a customer under influence of liquor alerted the police control room about the teenager. Sheena (name changed) had expressed her plight to the customer. Police said Sheena claimed there were two other teenagers along with her in the brothel but are yet to be rescued. Sources claimed girl's body bore several injury marks. She also told the police that the brothel-owner would force her to engage in prostitution through grave threats and relentless abuse.
Senior inspector R Unawane of Lakadganj police station said the girl had been kept in government shelter home. Her medical examination has been also done. "We are now trying to nab the culprits," said Unawane.

Jun 10, 2012: Married woman kidnapped, sold for Rs 1 lakh in Rajasthan

Alka Panse, TNN | Jun 10, 2012, 03.00AM IST
NAGPUR: A married woman was abducted and sold in Kota (Rajashan) for Rs 1 lakh by her friend who promised to help her get a job. The accused took the help of two others, one of whom runs a marriage bureau.

Jaripatka police are searching for Maithili Bhugade (name changed), a resident of Samata Nagar. On June 2, Maithili left home with her three-year-old son Arun (name changed) in search of a job. She was with her friend Jayashree. On June 7, the abductors sent back Arun with Rizan Ali (26), a resident of Wathoda. Ali has been arrested.

During the initial interrogation, Ali said that Maithili was sold to a businessman in Kota for Rs 1 lakh. He claimed that he had no idea about the whereabouts of Jayashree and the third accused Bhupendra. "We have sent a team to Kota," said the investigating officer Umesh Besarkar

Bhupendra is a resident of Baragaon in Kota (Rajasthan) and runs a marriage bureau. Police went to Jayashree's residence in Pardie but it was locked.

Husband Rahul (name changed) told TOI that on Tuesday, he was at his office when Maithili called and told him that she was going to Wardha with Arun in search of a job.

"She told me that Jayashree has got her a bank job with a good salary and hence she is leaving urgently," said Rahul, who works with a private firm.

Maithili called Rahul again on June 3. This time the call was short. She told Rahul that she reached safely and that Jayshree was there to take care of her. "When I asked her about the job, she said she would talk later and disconnected the call," added Rahul.

The next day, when Rahul called, Maithili's phone was not reachable. On June 5, she called Rahul from a new number and told him that she had lost her phone. She didn't inform him about the place from where she was calling.

On June 6, Rahul got a call from Rajasthan saying that Maithili married another man for Rs 1 lakh. "I was shocked. I said that I want to talk to Maithili or Jayshree but the caller refused. He gave me Jayashree's cell number and ended the call saying that she would return with Arun," said Rahul, who had a love marriage with Maithili five years ago.

Rahul immediately called Jayashree who asked him to meet her near HB Town on Kamptee Road to take Arun. Suspecting foul play, Rahul alerted Jaripatka police and set a trap near HB town.

However, Ali came with Arun. Police tried Jayashree's number but it was not reachable. Police has also learnt that Jayashree is linked to a cartel which sells girls and women to businessmen in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

May 30, 2012: Mom pushes minor girls into flesh trade, arrested

, TNN | May 30, 2012, 02.01AM IST
MUMBAI: A mother, who sent her two minor daughters to solicit customers, along with a woman pimp was arrested by the Mumbai police's social service branch from Sion.

Last Friday, assistant commissioner of police Vasant Dhoble sent a fake customer to the accused and busted the racket run by the two women. "We raided a room at Prerna Municipality Kamgar Chawl, where the accused had let out her mezzanine floor and sent her two minor daughters (11 and 13) for soliciting customers. The customers were sent by her neighbour for Rs 4,000," said Dhoble.

Police have arrested the neighbour, identified as Baby Nadar, under the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act ( PITA). Nadar would get customers and then ask the accused to send her daughters. The mother, whose name has been withheld, used to rent the room as well accept money for her daughter's services, said police. The probe has been handed over to Sion police station.
