CHANDURTHI, KARIMNAGAR: A Gulf returnee allegedly sold his wife for Rs 6,000 to a broker in Korutla mandal of Karimnagar district. The incident came to light here on Monday after police booked a case against the accused following a complaint from the victim's son.

The accused, Medula Rajender, 42, of Malyala village in Chandurthi mandal sold his wife Medula Ammayi, 36, to the broker on October 13 to meet his liquor expenses. Daily wager Rajender found it hard to buy liquor and struck a deal with the broker to sell his wife.

On Saturday morning, he forcibly took her to Chandurthi where he left her at the bus station and told her to wait for the broker. "I was shocked when he told me that he had sold me for Rs 6,000 to the broker in Kortula. He even bought a bus ticket to Korutla for me and left the place," recalled a crying Ammayi.

She traveled for some distance and got down at Rudrangi village. Later, she went to a relative's house at Rajalingampally village in Mudipally mandal to narrate the incident. "I had married Rajender 20 years ago but could not imagine in my wildest dreams that he would resort to such a heinous act," she said.

Based on a complaint from the couple's eldest son Anoop, 18, on Monday, police registered a case under section 498 of the IPC. Sub-inspector Rafeeq Khan told TOI that Rajender used to threaten and harass Ammayi for money. "We are counselling the couple. The accused would be produced before the family court soon," the SI said. The couple have two other sons - Karthik, 15 and Abhishek, 12.

Aug 30, 2012: Alert taxi driver foils husband’s bid to sell wife

KOLKATA: An alert cabbie claimed to have saved a woman from being sold in a brothel, allegedly by her husband, on Wednesday. Police are interrogating the woman, her husband and mother at the Hare Street police station. However, the officials are in a dilemma after the bride's mother came and rescued her son-in-law, saying that he cannot even think of doing such a thing. 

Sources said the couple reached Howrah station from their Hooghly home on Wednesday morning and boarded a shuttle taxi. While the girl sat on the rear seat, the husband, later identified as Shyamal Soren, sat on the front seat. Two more passengers were also in the taxi. 

As the taxi was moving along the Howrah Bridge, Soren allegedly whispered into the cabbie's ears, saying: "Where can girls be sold here?" The cabbie, Dipu Malik, reportedly said that it would take Rs 250 to reach there. "Soren agreed to pay the sum. Two other passengers got down from the taxi at Shakespeare Sarani. The cabbie first took them to Dorina Crossing, where he found an outdoor broadcasting (OB) van of a news channel. But he found none in the OB van. Then he took the couple near the Writers' Buildings," said sources. 

The cabbie then raised an alarm and the police personnel on duty there came rushing. On the basis of the complaint by the cabbie, the couple was taken to the officer-in-charge of Writers' Buildings. Later, Hare Street police station was informed. The couple and the cabbie were taken to the police station, said an officer. 

Interrogation revealed that the couple, who got married only three months ago, was coming from Chanditala in Hooghly. Both of them used to work there. On Wednesday morning, Soren and his wife had left for Howrah en-route to Gangarampur, where Soren's family members live. From Howrah, the couple was supposed to go to Sealdah station and from there they were to board a Gangarampur-bound train. 

The mother of the woman also reached the police station after being informed by the officials. But at Hare Street police station, she gave a different opinion about her son-in-law. She said Soren could not do something like that. The cabbie must have misunderstood his words. According to police, the cabbie stood by his statement. Soren, on the other hand, pleaded ignorance. Police will interrogate him again.

AKOLA: A man was arrested for selling his wife for Rs 60,000 to a person with whom she was forcibly married at village Dhanodiya in Madhya Pradesh recently.

Also arrested along with the husband were the purchaser Madan alias Bahadursing Chaudhri with whom the woman was married and two brokers. The incident came to light when mother of the said woman lodged a complaint with Mehekar police in Buldhana district on August 1.
Gajanan Manvatkar, who works as a sweeper at ST bus stand at Mehekar, was married seven years ago. The couple was blessed with two children. However, reports said that Gajanan is an addict and greedy for money. On the fateful day, Gajanan took his wife to Aurangabad on the pretext of attending a mass marriage ceremony in which they would get Rs 20,000 if they participated. He then contacted brokers and took wife to Dhanodiya and sold her to Madan for Rs 60,000. They also performed her marriage with him on the basis of bogus documents. When the woman sought details from Madan, he said that she was sold for Rs 60,000 by her hubby. When Gajanan returned to Mehekar, he gave evasive replies to his mother-in-law on the whereabouts of her daughter.
As the mother-in-law got suspicious, she filed a complaint of missing on August 2. A team of police was sent to MP from where the purchaser and brokers were arrested. The cops also brought the woman to Mehekar on Friday.
Offences have been registered against the accused under sections 366, 376, 478, 441, 472 and 506 read with 34 of Indian Penal Code.
Brokers Vithhal Debaje and Anil Wathore and Madan were arrested and the police are in search of other accused.
