May 3, 2012: School principal, director held for raping minor

BHOPAL: The director of a school and his wife who is a principal in the same school were arrested by the police in Betul town, 160 km from here, on Wednesday after a minor student was diagnosed "pregnant'' by doctors. The victim girl, a student of class 7, complained of abdominal pain and was taken to a local hospital where doctors found that she was pregnant. 

When quizzed by her parents, the girl broke down and said that the director of the school Yashwant Kharpate had allegedly raped her with the assistance of his wife. The rape was committed in the end of December last year. 

Police said that Yashwant Kharpate (45) and his wife Vandana (40) were arrested and a case registered against them under sections 376 (rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the IPC. 

According to the police, the victim girl a student of Apex English School, had repeatedly warned her mother that the school director Yashwant Kharpate often stopped her and said how beautiful she was. Her mother took the comments as the fatherly appreciation of a middle-aged man for a young girl. 

According to the victim's statement to the police, she was called into the principal's office one day in the last week of December and Vandana Kharpate said that the director Yashwant wished to see the girl in their residence on the top floor of the private school building. When the student reached there accompanied by Vandana, the principal shoved her in and then walked-out bolting the door from outside. 

After the alleged rape, the director threatened her with dire consequences if she mentioned about the incident outside. 

Following this, the girl stopped going to school regularly. She made excuses of ill-health whenever her parents asked her to go to school.

May 3, 2012: Drunk man rapes 65-year-old mother-in-law

NAGPUR: In an outrageous incident, a drunk man allegedly raped his 65-year-old mother-in-law. The victim, who is a TB patient, filed a complaint with the Koradi police accusing Ramesh Gawhane of committing the heinous act. 

A father of three, 46-year-old Gawhane, is absconding. Gawhane's daughter got married a year ago. His two sons are studying in ninth and seventh standard respectively. The matter was reported to Koradi police station by the victim's daughter on Tuesday night. 

The incident took place on Monday night while Gawhane's wife had gone to drop her daughter at her in-laws residence in Katol. The victim said Gawhane returned home heavily drunk at around 11pm. 

Gawhane was a nuisance in his area, says investigating cop 

Koradi police are looking for Ramesh Gawhane who alleged raped his mother-in-law in an inebriated state on Monday. Gawhane first ruthlessly thrashed his sons and asked them to leave the house. The victim was asleep when Gawhane gagged her and forced himself on her. Police said the boys slept out of the house the whole night. 

The victim, who was unable to move, narrated her horrifying plight to a woman from her neighbourhood when she came to meet her on Tuesday morning. "The blood stains on the victim's sari caused her neighbour to suspect something was wrong. The victim broke down and narrated the horrific incident to her. The neighbour immediately alerted Koradi police and the woman's daughter," said investigating officer PSI PV Fade. 

Fade added that Gawhane's wife and neighbours claimed that the accused had become a nuisance in their area. He would abuse and stare lecherously any woman of the area. But as Gawhane's wife was helpful towards others, no one had lodged any complaint against him so far. 

The victim was admitted to Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital for 15 days. Just a week ago she shifted to her daughter's residence near Godhni railway station. 

"The victim's family was not able to afford the rising hospital fee and hence brought her home. The doctors asked her to come for check-up once a week. Therefore, the victim's daughter insisted that she stay with her till her treatment," said Fade. 

Koradi police rushed the victim to IGGMCH. Cops registered a case after the medical examination. 

In another incident, a 17-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her lover on false promise of marriage. The victim, a labourer at a construction site, lodged a complaint against 24-year-old Sanjay Nehare, a driver at Wadi police station. 

According to the police, Nehare proposed the girl in front of her parents six months ago and assured them to marry her. However, two days before when the girl's parents asked Nehare about his marriage plans, he refused. The girl with her parents approached the police. Nehare has been reported absconding.

May 3, 2012: Man gets four years' rigorous imprisonment for cheating woman

PUNE: Additional chief judicial magistrate V K Yawalkar on Monday sentenced Shishir Sharad Puranik (32) of Parvati to four years' rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 for dupinga woman lawyer to the tune of over Rs 1.48 lakh, by promising to marry her in 2010.

In June 2010, the woman's family had published an advertisement in a newspaper, seeking a bridegroom for her.

Assistant public prosecutor S M Kadam said that Puranik, claiming to be a paediatrician at a private hospital in Chinchwad, responded to the advertisement and expressed interest in the proposal. Puranik also told the lawyer's family that he had booked a flat at Sadashiv Peth.

Kadam said both families met and the engagement was fixed. Puranik extracted money from the woman on various occasions, then disappeared and did not respond to telephone calls.

Realising that Puranik had cheated her by making false promises of marriage, the lawyer registered a cheating case against him with the Shivajinagar police on December 7, 2012. Puranik was arrested on January 12, 2011.

Puranik was convicted of cheating the lawyer under section 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

May 02, 2012: Delhi cop's son allegedly shoots mother dead

Rohtak:  The son of a Delhi Police sub-inspector allegedly shot dead his mother today at his house in Kheri Aasra village on Delhi-Haryana border, near Rohtak.

The accused, 32-year-old Sunil alias Bittu, son of Delhi Police Sub-Inspector Rai Singh, allegedly shot dead 55-year-old Shakuntla over a financial dispute, police said.

The accused purportedly called his father later and confessed to his crime, and has been absconding since. Police says, the victim's body, which was found lying in a pool of blood, has been sent for postmortem.

Following a complaint by Rai Singh, police have registered a case and launched a hunt to nab the accused.

NEW DELHI: A 53-year-old man was arrested from south Delhi for allegedly murdering his daughter-in-law after she refused to entertain his advances, police said on Wednesday. 

Arshad Ali allegedly stabbed to death Sabina (25) in her Sangam Vihar house on April 29 night and fled from the spot. 

Ali was apprehended from Hauz Rani yesterday on a tip-off, DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma said. 

"He told us that he had infatuation for his daughter- in-law and wanted to have physical relations with her. He was staying with his son Sabir. At that time, he teased his daughter-in-law but the matter was sorted out with the intervention of family members. 

"No complaint was lodged with the police then. On the fateful day, he went to Sabina's room and found her with her daughter. He tried to convince her for having a relationship with him but she refused and slapped him," Sharma said. 

Enraged at this, Ali stabbed Sabina repeatedly and fled from the spot. He threw the blood stained knife and shirt in the hilly area in M Block of Sangam Vihar. 

The suspicion had fallen on Ali after their landlord Salim saw the accused climbing down the stairs in blood-soaked clothes and with a knife. 

"Seeing Salim, Ali fled the scene. Salim went upstairs and found Sabina lying in a pool of blood," the official said. 

Ali, who hails from Chamarpur village in UP's Badaun district, shifted to Delhi three years ago. 

"He is a painter by profession. His wife died seven years ago. He has four children, including two daughters," Sharma said.

Bangalore: In a shocker from Bangalore a 60-year-old man died while trying to protect his niece from eve teasers. Alagesh suffered a heart attack after he was assaulted by 2 men for objecting to eve teasing of his 14 year old niece. 

Reuben Fernandes, Keenan Santos and now Alagesh...they were killed for doing what few would dare to do; raising their voice against eve teasing. 

60-year-old alagesh stood up to two local hooligans after they followed his 14 yr old niece home, all the while jeering and misbehaving with her, forcing her uncle to intervene. The intervention cost him his life and although the hooligans who pushed this man to death have been arrested. The 14-year-old girl is yet to come to terms with the death of her uncle who died trying to protect her. 

In a case of eve-teasing gone wrong 60-year old alagesh died of a heart attack after being assaulted by two youths on the night of 30th April, after he questioned them for teasing his niece. The two have since been apprehended and a case of culpable homicide booked against them, but the family of the deceased are calling for strict punishment to prevent such incidents in the future. 

Reuben, Keenan & Alagesh died while doing the right thing, but despite the nationwide outrage instance after instance of such incidents only emphasises the need for an iron fist to curb the menace of eve teasing.

May 2, 2012: Manipuri woman molested in Gurgaon

New Delhi, April 29: A 27-year-old girl from Manipur was allegedly molested in Gurgaon late on Friday night.

Three Manipuri youths who tried to intervene were also beaten up.

The police, however, have not been able to arrest the accused persons.

The victim, along with her husband, had gone to the local market in Sikanderpur in Gurgaon at 11pm. While her husband was inside the shop, the victim stepped out to attend a phone call.

While she was talking on the phone, two persons came up, and started making lewd comments and molested her.

She immediately shouted for help, drawing the attention of her husband and three other Manipuri youths who were in the vicinity.

The accused tried to flee, but the Manipuri youths managed to get hold of them.

“The men had got hold of the accused persons, when suddenly they were attacked by locals. They had been beaten up badly by the time police reached the spot,” said Pastor Ringphangam Vashi.

The police, however, claim that they are not aware about the men being beaten up.

“Since the accused persons had managed to flee from the spot we have not been able to identify them. We have registered a case under section 354 IPC against the unknown persons,” said Gurvinder Singh, SHO, DLF Phase- 1, Gurgaon.

The police also insist that it is possible that the accused were trying to snatch the victim’s phone and not molest her. “Although, we have registered a case, but it is possible that the men were just trying to snatch her phone. Such incidents are common. We can’t be sure of their intentions till we manage to arrest them,” Singh added.

“The number of incidents where people from the from Northeast are being targeted are growing. This racial profiling is really serious. The Prime Minister claims that he is a resident of Guwahati. Then he should do something about his own people,” Madhu Chandra, from North East Support Centre said.

Northeast groups held a protest at Jantar Mantar in the capital today. They have also submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister’s office against such incidents.

NEW DELHI: A 12-year-old girl residing in the Vasant Kunj area has lodged a complaint against her stepfather for outraging her modesty. In her statement (a copy is with TOI), the victim said that her father forced her to have a physical relation with him and misbehaved with her when she didn't agree. The stepfather has been arrested. 



The victim alleged that her father was an alcoholic and retuned home in a drunken state almost daily. She also said that he often passed lewd remarks and made obscene gestures at her. The incident occurred on April 27 when the father forced himself upon the girl while she was sleeping. "I woke up, pushed him aside and ran to my mother," she said. 

The girl's mother approached an NGO who took the duo to a police station.

May 2, 2012: 16-yr-old gets 3 years in jail for raping minor

GURGAON: The juvenile justice board on Monday sentenced a 16-year-old resident of Delhi to three years' imprisonment for raping a minor on February 21 last year.

According to the police, the incident took place at Bajghera near Palam Vihar on February 21, 2011.

The accused abducted a 15-year-old girl from her house when she was sleeping with her mother on the fateful night, said the police.

The accused then raped her and dumped her on the road. On the statement of the victim, Palam Vihar police lodged an FIR under Sections 363/366/376 of the IPC and arrested the accused.

On Monday, the district juvenile justice board sentenced the accused to three years' imprisonment for the crime.

May 2, 2012: Another infant girl found abandoned in a park

JAIPUR: An infant girl was found abandoned in the Mahatma Gandhi hospital park in Bhilwara. Unlike other cases where such girls are given to orphanage in the absence of their parents, many couples in the town have approached the child and welfare department to adopt the baby who is two-day old. 

On late Monday night, some people in the park heard the sound of a baby crying nearby. After looking around, they found an infant girl lying on a bench. Shocked at the plight of the girl, some women there immediately took the girl in their possession and informed the Bheemganj police station. Later, a team of police gave the girl to the people associated in the child welfare. 

Despite the fact that police were yet to trace down her actual parents, many couples have shown interest for adopting the baby girl. 

"How cruel would be her parents to drop her on the bench in the middle of night. The girl is hale and hearty and it appears that she was born at home, not at any maternity hospital," said Dr Suneeta Trivedi, chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Bhilwara, on Tuesday. 

Trivedi said that though police was doing the job of tracking down the parents, there are many childless couples, who have approached her to adopt the girl. "Our first priority is to ensure that the baby remains in good health. Since she is just two-day old, she has been kept at intensive care unit of the Mahatma Gandhi hospital. After a fortnight we will look at the applications to find suitable parents for the girl," she added. 

At least 12 couples have approached the child welfare committee to adopt the baby. 

"We have got nearly 12 such applications from childless parents and even single mothers have approached us to take the girl home. After a fortnight, we will definitely give the girl to a couple by completing legal formalities. That would be done only when her parents would not be found," Trivedi added. 

Apart from these applications, many people are coming to the Mahatma Gandhi hospital to find out if they can do anything for the baby girl. 

Police said that since the girl was not born at any maternity hospital they looking for leads if any woman's delivery was conducted at home itself.
