"Around 9pm on Monday, the NGO members met Idreshi outside Andheri station. Idreshi showed them a picture of Samina's sister. After they okayed the 'deal', Idreshi demanded an advance of Rs 5,000," a police officer said. Mar 25, 2013: Trafficked girl rescued, goes home after 3 years

, TNN | Mar 25, 2013, 04.34 AM IST
NEW DELHI: She doesn't look a day above 17 years. So it comes as a shock when a painfully thin three-year-old tugs at her blouse and calls her "ma" . It turns out that Savita (name changed) is about 20 years old — though she isn't certain about her exact age or even birth date. In her young life, she has already been traded to live with strange men thrice, and borne two sons, aged three and one, respectively.

Sitting listlessly in a shelter in Delhi, she struggles to manage her loosely draped sari and her kids. There is little hope left in her — she has already experienced far more than she should have at her age. "I was taken from my parents' home in their absence and brought to Delhi byKaalu Sheikh who had raped me," she said in a voice totally devoid of emotion.

Savita was then taken to Bharatpur, Rajasthan, and sold for Rs 10,000. "Initially I was asked to live with a man called Bachu. I protested and got beaten up. Then he got me married to his elder brother Binod Jatu," she added. Jatu is the father of the two children.

Rescued by the anti-human trafficking unit, CID, West Bengal; Bharatpur police and Shaktivahini, an NGO, she is returning to her village in Bardhaman after three years. Savita's experiences have changed her a great deal. She has become quieter than ever. "Before I was taken to Rajasthan, I used to wear a frock. There I was told to wear a sari," she said. "I taught myself to wear one."

Cops say Savita is one of the rare cases where a missing person is traced and rescued from the trafficking nexus. "Her rescue became imperative after the Calcutta high court directives in March that had asked for this girl to be produced before it. Investigations were transferred to us from the district police," said Sarbari Bhattacharjee, officer in charge, trafficking unit.

It was her parent's relentless effort that got the machinery moving. Savita's parents gave a vital clue when they said a neighbour might be involved.

"We had to reopen the case in the trial court. Earlier , the district police had filed a closure report," said Bhattacharjee.

She added: "Usually there is no information on where the minor is taken and by whom. Less than 1% are rescued and restored to their families."

According to the government data, 19,524 minors went missing in Kolkata in 2011, of which only 7,227 were traced. Of the untraced , 8,725 were women. Most of the missing persons end up in the "prostitution, forced marriages or begging rackets", said Rishikant from Shaktivahini.

Even as Savita waits for her train back to Bardhaman , she finds herself torn between motherhood and childhood and is unclear as to what the future holds for her.

The victim, Madhu Dantania, who stays at Garib Awas Yojna in Naroda, has registered an attempt to murder complaint at the Naroda police station in this regard. The incident took place on Saturday. Angered by this Dantania confronted her Yadav. However, matters took a violent turn. "Yadav, his wife and two sons ganged up on Dantania, doused her with kerosene and set her ablaze. The family members then fled from their home," said the official.

Mar 25, 2013: Student 'molested' in Kolkata college

Mar 25, 2013, 05.48 AM IST
KOLKATA: A Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) leader allegedly molested a second-year student and her friend at SA Jaipuria College in north Kolkata on Saturday.

The accused, Sudip Saha, a third year BCom student of the college, was arrested after a complaint by the victim's father. But he was released on bail on Sunday afternoon, despite being booked under non-bailable sections.

While TMCP leaders of the college said the victim was trying to frame Saha, TMCP state president Shankudeb Ponda said "the law will take its own course".

According to the complaint lodged by the victim's father, Saha, the cultural secretary of the Trinamool dominated students' union, had been disturbing his daughter for quite some time now. But the victim did not respond.

On Saturday evening, the victim was chatting with a friend inside the college premises when Saha allegedly passed lewd comments at the girl. When her friend protested, an altercation broke out between him and Saha following which the TMCP leader dragged the duo to the principal, the complaint stated.

Saha reportedly told the principal that the girl and her friend were seen in a compromising position after which the principal ordered them to call their parents.

The moment the duo left the principal's office, Saha and his associates, who were waiting outside, assaulted them and also molested the girl, said the victim's father in the complaint.

The girl's father rushed to the college on being informed of the assault and took his injured daughter to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. A complaint was later lodged at Shyampukur police station following which a case of assault and molestation under Section 354 D of the amended law was initiated. Saha was arrested late on Saturday and released on bail the next day.

The victim's father blamed police for not opposing the bail of the accused.

TMCP leaders, however, had a different story to tell. "We have conducted an internal probe. We found that the college principal had sent Sudip to call the girl since he had found her in a compromising position with a friend. The principal has also informed the same to police in writing. The girl is now cooking up a story against Saha to get rid of the punishment from the college authorities," said a TMCP leader of the college.

TMCP state president Shankudeb Ponda steered clear of the controversy. "It's not a political matter. It's entirely an internal matter of a college. It's true that the name of our leader has been cropped up. Law will take its own course and we will not interfere," he said.
