Mar 15, 2013: Hotel worker held for raping mentally ill woman

MADURAI: Thilagarthidal police arrested a 24-year-old man from Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district on charges of raping a mentally ill woman at the Madurai Railway station premises on Tuesday night. The woman from Tenkasi was brought to Madurai for treatment by her elderly mother and the two were waiting in the junction to catch a train back home. The man allegedly offered the mother a coffee, laced with sedatives and raped the mentally ill woman. The mother, who did not want to prefer a police complaint was taking her daughter back but her health deteriorated and they were detrained at Thirumangalam railway station.

A medical examination at Thirumangalam government hospital on the woman has confirmed that she was raped. The case, which was initially referred to Thirumangalam police station was later shifted to Thilagarthidal police in the city limits since the incident occurred in their limits.

Police traced down the culprit based on the information provided by the woman and her mother. Police held V Balamurugan, 24 from Nanguneri who confessed to have committed the crime during interrogation. According to police sources, Balamurugan was working in a hotel at Periyar Bus stand. He had been booked under kidnap and rape charges and will be remanded on Friday.
