Mar 5, 2013: 2 minor girls raped; accused thrashed by villagers

MALERKOTLA/BARNALA: Two minor girls were raped in two incidents, one in Sangrur and another in a Barnala village. The accused have been arrested and in one case, the boy blamed for the crime was brutally thrashed by villagers. He was admitted to PGI in Chandigarh.

The incident in Sangrur happened when the 15-year-old girl was waiting for a bus on Sunday. A youth, Mohammad Latif, approached her and offered her a lift in his car. DSP Bimal Kumar said: "Latif called his two accomplices Mohammad Zahid and Shamshad Ali, all in their early 20s. They raped the girl at a secluded place and dumped her. The girl informed her family when she got home." A case was registered and Zahid and Shamshad were arrested but Latif is absconding. The girl has been medically examined at the civil hospital.

In the second incident, an 18-year-old boy raped a girl in Barnala on Monday afternoon. Cops said that Sandeep Singh entered the girl's house by climbing a wall and she was alone at the time. Her parents who were at their neighbour's place rushed home on hearing cries of the girl and caught the boy who was attempting an escape.

The rapist was brutally beaten up by the family members and passersby and was taken to Barnala civil hospital. He was critical and referred to PGi in Chandigarh. A rape case has been registered against Sandeep Singh.
