TNN | Feb 29, 2012, 05.43AM IST
HYDERABAD: A 30-year-old man on Tuesday set his paramour's minor daughter ablaze to take revenge on the woman in Gajularamaram on the outskirts of the city. The seven-year-old girl, Bhavani, suffered severe burns in the incident and succumbed at hospital later.

The accused, Vijay, wanted to take revenge on his paramour Sujatha as he suspected that she was cheating on him.

On Tuesday morning, a petrol pump employee at Mahadevpuram near Gajularamaram noticed fire and smoke in an abandoned house.

Some of them rushed to the spot and found a mattress wrapped around a girl on fire. They also noticed Vijay, who was in an inebriated condition, hurrying away from the place. He was overpowered by the group.

Locals quickly put out the fire and shifted the girl, who by then had suffered severe burns, to a nearby hospital.

As the condition of the girl turned critical, she was then shifted to Gandhi Hospital with the assistance of police, where she succumbed to burns while undergoing treatment. Vijay was handed over to police.

After the death of her husband Chennaiah two years ago, Sujata came in contact with Vijay, a distant relative from her native place in Mahbubnagar district. Soon, their friendship turned into an affair, police said.

Vijay, who is a daily wager, used to frequently spend time at Sujata's house.

On Tuesday morning, Sujata left for work. Immediately, he picked up Bhavani along with the mattress she was sleeping on and sneaked out of the house.

He then cycled to an abandoned house at Gajularamaram, doused her in kerosene and set her ablaze. "The exact reason for his extreme act is yet to be ascertained," Jeedimetla inspector A Sanjeeva Rao said.

Police have booked a case against Vijay under section 302 (Murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Feb 29, 2012: SC saves man who murdered wife, 3 kids from the gallows

PTI | Feb 29, 2012, 08.02PM IST
NEW DELHI: Holding that the gruesome murders were committed on the spur of the moment due to suspicion of his spouse's infidelity, the Supreme Court has commuted to life term the death penalty of a man who murdered his wife and their three kids in Madhya Pradesh's Dewas district.

A bench of justices, while altering the sentence to 21 years, felt the murders by Brajendra Singh of his wife Aradhana and their three children did not fall under the "rarest of rare category" warranting capital punishment.

"He has lost his children, whom he had brought up for years, and also his wife. Besides that, it was not a planned crime and also lacked motive. It was a crime which had been committed out of suspicion and frustration.

"The circumstances, examined cumulatively, would to some extent suggest the existence of a mental imbalance in the accused at the moment of committing the crime.

Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe said Vishal Jagota, 34, his mother Parveen Jagota, 57 and sister Rajani Jagota, 31 were found guilty after a bench trial of labour trafficking and assault charges for using intimidation, threats and physical violence to force the young woman into a life of servitude and sexual abuse.
Parveen Jagota and Rajani Jagota face up to seven years in state prison when sentenced on May 22, 2012 before Judge William Nelson, whileVishal Jagota faces up to one year in the Rockland County jail.
Assistant District Attorney Arthur Ferraro said the case marked the first indictments, trial and convictions under New York State’s new Labour Trafficking Law.
"These convictions underscore our serious commitment to prosecuting those defendants who would prey on vulnerable -and in many cases young - victims," Zugibe said.
"Human trafficking is a violent and degrading crime that will not be tolerated."
The victim, now 25-years-old, is an Indian citizen who was brought to the US five years ago after an arranged marriage with Vishal Jagota.
The family used intimidation, physical and sexual abuse and manipulation to force the victim to work as a "round-the-clock servant, performing a variety of household chores, cooking, child care and other tasks under threats of violence," according to court documents.
When the victim, whose name was not revealed, threatened to contact authorities, the Jagotas vowed to concoct wild stories, accusing her of committing various types of crime.

The victim was not allowed to receive medical treatment for the serious burns and was told to treat the open wound with toothpaste.

The woman's father-in-law was accused of touching her sexually but was later acquitted. The Jagotas had also hidden the woman's green card, passport and other documents that restricted her movement and forced her to comply with her in-laws' demands, the documents said.

AHMEDABAD: A 27-year-old woman clobbered her husband to death when he was asleep in the wee hours of Sunday. Police have arrested the woman on charges of murder and suspect it to be the fallout of an extra-marital affair.
Odhav police officials received a complaint from Ranchhod Patel, secretary of Suketu Shopping Center, Nikol Road, on Sunday morning, that they have found a dead body in the building. Upon reaching the spot, police found the body of Pokram Sengar, 30, a resident of the same premises, from Mahalaxmi Flour Mill where he used to work. His wife Mamta was absconding from the spot.
"Sengar was hit repeatedly on his temple with a 10-kilogram weight used on weighing scale. It must have been an instantaneous death for him. Our first priority was to track down Mamta. We tracked her down with her five-year-old son with the help of technical and human surveillance from a relative's residence. She confessed upon detention that she killed her husband," said P S Goswami, inspector of Odhav police station.
He added that as per her statement, the duo had a major fight on Saturday after Sengar saw her with Vikas, a youth working at the flour mill, in the market. Suspecting them of having an affair, Sengar beat up Mamta, which enraged her. She was awake when Sengar fell asleep at night and struck him with the weight repeatedly and fled from the spot.
"We suspect her to be involved in the relationship. The duo did not have a cordial marital life and she wanted to leave him. However, we are recording statements of Vikas and nearby residents to corroborate the theory. We have arrested her for the murder," said an Odhav police official.

Feb 27, 2012: Gagged, raped at gunpoint, scarred for life

, TNN | Feb 27, 2012, 01.03AM IST
NOIDA: Life has come to a standstill for the girl, who was allegedly gangraped by five of her friends. The Class X student of a city public schoolis under immense trauma and breaks down every time she narrates her horrifying tale. The incident has left indelible scars on her psyche. With less than a week left for her board exams, she is unsure where her life will head after this.

In the absence of any counselling provided by the district authorities, the trauma of such victims often goes unheard. "When the police bring in someone for a medical test, we just do that. However, if the family asks for help then the district hospital has the right facilities for the same. We have a well-equipped adolescent health centre with a counsellor," said chief medical superintendent Meena Mishra.

The girl claims she was blackmailed and forced at gunpoint to accompany the five men in their car, forced to consume alcohol, gagged, beaten up and raped by each of them. She had met the prime accused, Rahul Arya, last year near Sector 12 where she went for tuition classes. "They began talking and at some point he introduced her to the rest of them. However, she was not really friends with any of them," said the victim's father.

Her family says she has refused to eat or drink anything since the incident and has been blaming herself for the horrific episode. "When I went to the police station, I saw the accused and even slapped one of them. They told me that my daughter's character was not good. She had provoked them and that it was her idea to drink," the girl's mother said. "I am not denying that my daughter is very outgoing and makes friends easily. But does that mean that she invited rape and brought this upon herself?" she added.

In a shocking revelation, the victim has also claimed that the same men had raped her on May 24 last year. However, her stepfather was away at the time and her mother and close relatives, all worried about the girls' reputation, decided best to hush up the matter.

"They told me that they had recorded the May 24 incident on their cellphones and if I did not accompany them, they would upload the video on the Internet. I had no choice but to get in the car," the girl said. Her family, meanwhile, is worried that while her physical injuries have healed over time, she "might never be able to get over the self blame for exposing her vulnerability and the sheer trauma".

Experts say that a conducive environment and cognitive counselling is essential at such times to help the victim get over the stress. "The child needs to overcome the shock and self angst. She must be dealt with great sensitivity and her self confidence and trust in relationships need to be restored above anything else," said Dr Sameer Malhotra, chief psychiatrist, Fortis Hospital, Noida.

Feb 26, 2012: 'Tortured' hubbies bond to battle better halves

, TNN | Feb 26, 2012, 02.59AM IST

RANCHI: When the world was celebratingValentine's Day on February 14, a group of men formed an organisation called Save Family Initiative to address the problems of those men who get harassed and framed in legal cases by their better halves.

"SFI will provide legal and moral support to such husbands. There can be frequent quarrels between husbands and wives but that does not mean one drags the other to the police or court. When a wife takes her in-laws and husband to court by fabricating a case of dowry and torture against them, life can be hell for these people," said secretary Rajesh Kumar.

He added that he has also been a victim of dowry but because of timely intervention of friends and family, his marriage was saved.

At present, there are 50 permanent members, who regularly meet and give every possible help to men who have been allegedly implicated in cases of dowry and torture. The organization does not take any fees.

"We don't say that all cases filed by women are false and fabricated but a number of them definitely take advantage of the law," said Kumar, adding that he personally knows many families which were forced to pay huge sums to settle cases out of court.

One of the members claimed a family had to pay over Rs 1 crore to their daughter-in-law. "We want this practice to come to an end. There should be equal protection for men and women. We have moved the petition before the committee of Parliament that is looking after possible amendments to the law," he said.

Another member, Ajay Bharatia, said most of the men who approach them are highly qualified professionals. "Most of the victims are doctors, engineers, lawyers and accountants, who are afraid to face criminal cases," said Bharatia.

Katwa, West Bengal: A woman was allegedly gang-raped after she tried to put up a resistance during a robbery attempt in a train near Katwa in the Burdwan district of West Bengal.
The incident occurred at around 7:15 pm on Saturday when the train was passing through the Ahmedpur-Katwa section between the Pachandi and Ambalgram stations. A person allegedly approached the guard and asked him to apply brakes, saying a passenger had fallen on the tracks. The guard alerted the driver, who stopped the train. When he got off the train, a gang armed with guns and choppers surrounded him, pointed a gun to his head and snatched his walkie-talkie, mobile phone and other valuables. They then proceeded to loot the passengers on the train, most of who were daily commuters.
The alleged victim, a widow, told the police that when she tried to object, she was dragged out of the train and raped by five men on the railway tracks.
“They took away jewellery from my hands first, then they tried taking my earrings. I resisted so they started beating me. Then they took away my earrings. They also took away Rs. 1000 from me. Then they dragged me out of the train and raped me. Then one of them asked the others to leave me as I was crying,” the woman said.
Meanwhile, the other women inside the train who also raised a protest were beaten up. The driver and guard sustained minor injuries in the incident.
The alleged victim has been taken to Katwa for a medical test and further investigation. No FIR has been registered in the case so far.
“We haven’t received any formal complaint about the rape as yet but the guard and driver of the train lodged a complaint of robbery. There are also allegations that a woman was taken away by the criminals. It seems no molestation or rape took place on the train. But if any molestation or rape occurred elsewhere, I have directed the Government Railway Police to take cognizance, said Dilip Mitra, DG, railways.
