RANCHI: The body of a 26-year-old woman was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her bedroom with her parents accusing the in-laws for torturing and killing her for not paying the dowry.
Kanchan Singh's body was recovered by from her in-laws' house in Lalpur area of the city on Sunday morning.
"The in-laws regularly tortured her and started demanding a motorcycle soon after her marriage in 2010. When we expressed our inability, they started beating up her. Last (Saturday) night also, she called me and requested to visit her house and rescue her," said victim's uncle Dilip Singh. "Since it was around midnight, I asked her to tolerate till the morning. I thought that we would go to her house along with some of our relatives and try to convince the in-laws to stop torturing her," an inconsolable Dilip added repenting for his decision to not visit Kanchan's house in the night.
Neighbours of the victim said she was the second wife of Vinod Singh. "A few years ago, Vinod's first wife died in hospital during childbirth. The family members prevailed on Vinod and got him married again with Kanchan so that she could look after the two kids from his first wife," said a neighbour. He also admitted that the husband and in-laws used to torture Kanchan and often quarrel.
Kanchan's husband, who was arrested, denied the charges of torture and murder. "No one in the family ever tortured her or demanded dowry. All the allegations are baseless," said Vinod. However, he could not explain why his wife "committed suicide" in her room when all family members were present and injury marks were visible on the body. DSP Anuranjan Kispotta said, "We have sent the body for postmortem and will be in a position to say anything after we get the report."
