PUNE: The Yerawada police on Friday night arrested a criminal on police record, Deepak Papal (26), for allegedly raping his 23-year-old handicap sister at his residence in Yerawada.
Papal's wife was also arrested for helping him commit the crime on Saturday. A magisterial court on Saturday sent the couple to police custody remand till February 8. Senior inspector Deepak Sawant of the Yerawada police station said Papal had allegedly raped his helpless sister between December 3, 2011 and February 3, 2012.
Sawant said the victim, afflicted by polio, made complaints about the alleged incident to her sister and mother. The victim's family members were reluctant to register a complaint against Papal and warned him to maintain distance from her.
However, Papal refused to do so, and allegedly sought help from his wife to rape his sister on various occasions.
Finally, the victim's mother registered a complaint against the couple with the police.
Previously, Papal was involved in several property offence cases in Pune. The couple was arrested under sections 376, 323 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.
