Jun 9, 2013: Man inserts rod into blind girl after raping her

TNN | Jun 9, 2013, 02.31 AM IST
BHUBANESWAR: Police revealed on Saturday that a youth accused of raping a visually-challenged girl near Puri on Wednesday, inserted a rod in her private parts to ensure that she died.

The accused, Banmali Barik, is a taxi driver and was acquainted with the victim. He has been arrested and has confessed to the crime.

SP (Puri) Anup Sahoo said Barik was the lone assailant and rape was the prime motive. He killed her to eliminate evidence against him.

"When the girl resisted Barik's advances, he first tried to strangulate her. He then inserted a rod in her private parts multiple times to ensure that she is dead," the SP said.

Police said the girl cried for help but nobody was around. She bled to death on the spot. Barik watched her dying and left after he was sure that the victim was not alive to register a complaint against him. The girl had not grown properly for her age and was suffering from hormonal deficiency, police said.
The girl's body was found in the casuarina forest along the Puri-Konark marine drive road on Thursday. Preliminary autopsy report has attributed the girl's death to excessive internal bleeding.

Jun 7, 2013: Youth jailed for raping, forcibly marrying minor

PTI | Jun 7, 2013, 07.44 PM IST
NEW DELHI: A youth has been sentenced to seven years in jail by aDelhi court for raping a minor girl after kidnapping and forcibly marrying her.

Besides the jail term to Surender, 28, additional sessions judge T R Naval also sent neighbour Bala, 48, to jail for five years for kidnapping the 14-year-old girl and compelling her for marriage in June 2006.

"It is held that evidence on record has proved that both the accused (Surender and Bala) in furtherance of their common intention kidnapped the prosecutrix (minor) by adopting deceitful means and under coercion with the intention that she may be compelled to marry against her will with Surender and she may be forced to do illicit intercourse and he also committed sexual intercourse with the girl against her will and without her consent," the court said.

The judge also said that it had been proved that both the accused in furtherance of their common intention had kidnapped the minor girl from legal guardianship of her father without his consent.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 and Rs 13,000 on Surender and Bala, a woman, respectively.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the morning of June 30, 2006 when the girl was going for work in a factory in Gandhi Nagar area in East Delhi and Bala, who was living in her neighbourhood, called her and asked her to go with Surrender to a temple.

Instead of taking her to the temple, Surrender took her to his home in Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, raped her and then forcibly married her, the police said.

The victim had told the police that she had not raise an alarm as Surender had threatened to kidnap her sisters and kill her parents also.

The minor told the police that after few days, Bala had come to Surender's house asking him for money but when he refused to do so, she told them that she would sell the girl to someone else for Rs 5,000.

On the girl's insistence, Surender dropped her near her house here in July 2006.

Based on her statement, an FIR was lodged and Bala was arrested on November 12, 2006. Surrender, who was initially evading arrest, was caught later on.

During the trial, Surender admitted that Bala had asked him to take away the girl but pleaded that the minor had accompanied and married him of her own will.

Bala sought leniency in sentencing saying she was a woman and has to support her five children.

Surender also sought a lenient view on the ground that he belongs to a poor family and has to support his aged parents.

Jun 4, 2013: Raped teen critical after cops, hospital neglect her

Tanushree Roy Chowdhury & Durgesh Nandan Jha, TNN | Jun 4, 2013, 03.59 AM IST
NEW DELHI/GURGAON: Rehabilitation is the least that a rape victim can get from law and order agencies and hospitals. But in a case of apathy, a 13-year-old victim of gang rape and her parents, who are migrant labourers, were shown the door not just by police but also by a hospital in Gurgaon in defiance of the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013. Now, the victim, who is four months pregnant, faces risk to her life even as Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital and Gurgaon's Civil Hospital are busy passing the buck.

The 13-year-old victim was abducted by a woman in February and gang-raped by four of her accomplices before being found on March 11. While the city police have managed to arrest just one accused, the remaining four, including the woman, are on the run. A medical report confirmed rape and also found the victim to be 20 days pregnant. Since no one bothered to read out the report to or even inform the parents, who are migrant labourers, about the victim's medical condition, the family claims they had no clue until they saw the deteriorating health of the 13-year-old.

The matter, according to a city-based NGO-Farishte Group-was not highlighted by the media. "The family approached us only on May 27. After we took the girl to Civil Hospital, senior doctors just made us run around the entire day with the excuse that we did not have documents (medical report). We moved the city court on Tuesday and got an order. When the girl and her parents returned to the hospital on Friday, they had to again face harassment until we went back today (June 3)," said Dr Anju Rawat Negi of Farishte Group.

According to advocate Kulbhushan Bhardwaj, the duty doctor said the victim was young and had placenta previa (a condition in which the placenta is inserted in the lower uterine segment). She might have to undergo hysterectomy or surgical removal of the uterus in case of excessive bleeding. They offered to refer the case to Safdarjung Hospital.

However, the advocate added that Dr Sunita Sharma, senior medical officer and also the head of the newly-launched 'One Stop Crisis Centre', "wrote in the referral that the parents wanted to be referred to Safdarjung instead of mentioning the hospital's incompetence". DCP (West) Surender Pal Singh said that they have constituted a special team to arrest the accused. When contacted, Dr Sharma initially denied handling the case. "We do not have the expertise in handling such cases, we do not even operate one in a year," she said. The hospital makes a large number of referrals to private city hospitals, AIIMS and Safdarjung in Delhi.

Sources at Safdarjung confirmed that the matter had arrived on Monday at 3.30 pm and the patient might undergo a pregnancy termination.

, TNN | Jun 1, 2013, 03.00 AM IST
MUMBAI: A 14-year-old girl who left home to commit suicide after her parents opposed her friendship with a boy was allegedly kidnapped and was raped in Bandra on Tuesday.

An auto driver provided her shelter after she later went to Borivli and roamed around at night. She returned to her residence in Bandra the next afternoon and filed a rape case. The Nirmal Nagar police arrested Alpesh Mohite (22), Ashish Gupta (21), Nayan Devadiga (23), Sachin Gupta (23) and Sanjay Jadhav (24) and produced them before a court on Friday. The court remanded them to police custody till June 5. One of those arrested was known to the victim.

The police said the class VIII student was friendly with a boy from the locality. Her parents restricted her movement after they learned about her friendship, took away her mobile phone, and warned her.

The victim left home as she was disturbed.

She was walking towards the highway planning to commit suicide when some persons stopped their car close to her. One of them, known to her, told her to accompany them. She allegedly told them to drive her wherever they wanted as she did not want to return home.

The group took her to an isolated spot where one of them raped her. The other accused allegedly molested and attempted to rape her when she screamed for help.

The accused abandoned her and fled in the car.

She then went to Bandra station and boarded a Borivli-bound train. In Borivli, the auto driver spotted her and gave her shelter for the night. The next morning, he dropped her to Borivli station, from where she went to a relative's house in Virar, but it was locked. She then visited another relative, who convinced her to return back home.

Jun 1, 2013: Delhi acid attack victim dies in Mumbai

IANS | Jun 1, 2013, 06.11 PM IST
MUMBAI: A nurse from Delhi who was attacked with acid here May 2 died Saturday, her family said.

Preeti Rathi died in a private hospital.

"Doctors removed the ventilator and other medical aids, which kept heralive, around 4pm," Amar Singh Rathi, the victim's father, told IANS.

Acid was flung on Preeti, 25, by some unknown people as she got off the New Delhi-Mumbai Garib Rath Express at Bandra Terminus May 2 morning to begin work as a nurse at the army hospital here.

She was on a ventilator for the past two weeks as her right lung had collapsed and the left one was only partly functional.

According to doctors attending to Rathi, her survival chances were as slim as five percent, given the extent of internal injuries, damage to vital organs and bleeding following the attack.

Acid had entered her oesophagus, windpipe and trachea.

She was initially treated for burns and other complications at the Masina Hospital in Byculla and then shifted to Bombay Hospital, New Marine Lines, May 18 for advanced medicare.

Doctors prioritised efforts to keep her alive and attempted corrective surgery on her, but abandoned the operation at the last minute due to internal bleeding.

Amar Singh had petitioned Maharashtra Home Minister R.R. Patil and state Director General of Police Sanjeev Dayal last fortnight, asking that the probe into the attack be taken away from the Government Railway Police (GRP).

"We want it to be handed over to either the state Crime Investigation Department of Central Bureau of Investigation as the GRP are not investigating it properly," Amar Singh claimed in his petition.

He alleged that the GRP had wrongfully arrested a youth and was yet to track down the real culprit.

Saddened by the family's plight, the Shiv Sena dropped its anti-north Indian stance and arranged accommodation for it near the hospital. The railways had agreed to foot all of the victim's medical expenses.

For the last three weeks, Amar Singh, his wife, their son and two nephews maintained a constant vigil by Rathi's bedside as she battled for life.
