The Gavais were booked for abetting the suicide of Amol's wife Madhuri and harassing her for dowry.
Amol, along with rest of his family members, was booked under section 306 of Indian Penal Code (IPC) for abetting wife's suicide. The Gavais were also slapped with section 498A of IPC for subjecting wife to cruelty. The court has sentenced Amol to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with fine of Rs 3,000 and another six months of jail in default under section 306 IPC. The husband was also slapped with two years of imprisonment and fine of Rs 2,000 and another three months of jail in default holding him guilty under section 498A.
Amol and Madhuri had tied the knot on June 22, 2010. The couple led a happy life for a couple of months before Amol and his family started torturing Madhuri to bring cash from home. The Gavais demanded Rs20,000 for starting a garage for Amol. The torture increased after Madhuri gave birth to a girl as the family wanted a boy. The Gavais also did not take proper care of Madhuri after she suffered an electric shock. The demands for money continued. Hassled by the continued harassment, Madhuri ended life by hanging herself on December 6, 2012.
Additional public prosecutor Prashant Bhandekar said that prosecution examined five witnesses during the trial. "The victim's relative and brother deposed before the court regarding their payments of cash to the Gavais. The court relied upon their version as concrete evidence in the case before holding the deceased's husband responsible," he said.
The court acquitted Amol's parents_ Ambadas and Suman_ apart from younger brother Kamlesh and sisters Nalu and Anju.
