NOIDA: A leading financial service company's vice president was arrested on Thursday on allegations of sexual harassment and molestation of one of his female employees.

A police team will go to the company's office on Friday to record the statement of other female employees to establish the character of the accused.

According to Gautam Budh Nagar SSP Praveen Kumar, the incident took place on Tuesday when the accused identified as G Krishnan (38) allegedly molested the victim Rekha (name changed). The victim then filed a complaint with the police. The matter was then transferred to the Mahila police station.

Police said the victim, a resident of Sector 19, has been working as a manager in the company located in Sector 125 of Noida for the past 18 months. The accused is a resident of Arun Vihar in Noida. "Two months ago, the accused had first tried to molest the victim after showing her porn videos. According to the complaint, the accused has allegedly tried to molest the victim at least thrice," said SO, Monika Chauhan.

Nov 27, 2012: 13-year-old girl allegedly raped by father, brother, uncle in Kerala

Edited by Sabyasachi Dasgupta | Updated: November 27, 2012 21:30 IST
Thalassery: When a 13-year-old class 8 student in Kerala's Kannur refused to go home after school and would incessantly cry, her teachers discovered a shocking tale of abuse. The child was allegedly raped over the last two years by her father, her 15-year-old brother and her uncle.

The teachers called the police and the two men have been arrested and a case of rape has been registered against them; the boy has been sent to a juvenile home. The girl is now housed at a home run by the Child Welfare committee where she will be counselled.

But tales of horror continue to emerge. The police have now found that the victim's older sister died two years ago - she allegedly committed suicide. An investigation has been opened to find out if she too was abused by the men of the house, but the cops haven't found anything suspicious so far. The child has reportedly told her teachers that the sister killed herself to escape similar abuse.

The family is poor. The girl's mother works as coolie, said KC Rosakutty, who heads the Kerala Women's Commission which is overseeing investigations in the case. She said the victim's mother claims she had no idea about the incident. Ms Rosakutty said, "It is very sad that the mother is also not coming forward and reporting the case. This shows the situation in the house. She might be afraid of her husband."

The commission has offered to take the girl under its care. Ms Rosakutty also said that it might write to the chief minister for an enquiry into the elder sister's death. Congress activist Suma Balakrishnan has also approached Home Minister T Radhakrishnan seeking a thorough probe into both the cases as well as the arrest of all those involved in the two crimes.

"This is a shocking case of two minor sisters being raped by family members. The police say the elder sister committed suicide. But this needs to be probed as no proper inquiry was done," Ms Rosakutty said.

Nov 22, 2012: Man jailed for molesting daughter

TNN | Nov 22, 2012, 12.56 AM IST
NEW DELHI: Relying on the testimony of the victim and her mother, a trial court has sentenced a man to one year rigorous imprisonment for sexually molesting his eight-year-old daughter.

Metropolitan magistrate Kiran Gupta dismissed the leniency plea by the central Delhi resident Jaipal saying, "The custodian of the child is the father on whom not only rests the responsibility of building character / career and upbringing of the child but he is also a vital part of her life. If the father himself is found guilty of such a heinous offence, no mitigating circumstances can be found to reduce the sentence."

On the night of May 18, 2011, when the child's mother had gone to the bathroom, Jaipal had sexually molested his sleeping daughter, said the prosecution. The mother had rushed back to the room on hearing her daughter's scream and saw what her husband was doing. On being caught, he had beaten up his wife and the victim and threatened to kill them if they disclosed the incident to anyone, it had added.

Jaipal, however, claimed that his wife had implicated him in the case as she wanted some property in her name.

NEW DELHI: A youth has been sentenced to 32 years in jail by a Delhi court for kidnapping and raping a toddler after entering her house for committing a theft.

Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau jailed 21-year-old Uday Kumar Yadav observing that he is a "predatory paedophile" and a "menace" to the society as he had not spared even a year-old child.

The court sentenced the youth to seven years in jail for kidnapping the toddler and with life imprisonment (20 years) for raping her while imposing upon him a five-year jail term for stealing a mobile phone from the house.

The court said all three sentences would run one after one and stipulated that the convict should not be given any remission in his sentence unless he spends an actual sentence of 20 years of life term.

The court also praised the investigating officers who had cracked the case on the basis of electronic surveillance and forensic evidence.

It said it would have been difficult to nab the culprit "had it not been for the excellent work done by the initial investigating officers who had cracked this case on the basis of electronic surveillance and analysis of data while the forensics (DNA finger printing) came to the aid of the investigating agencies as a handy tool later."

"It was only then that accused Yadav could be actually cornered and the credit for the same is required to be given to this team of the investigators for the efficient use of the aforesaid investigation techniques," the court added.

It also asked the Delhi government to pay a compensation of Rs one lakh to the family of the victim for her welfare and rehabilitation.

Nov 16, 2012: Jobless man jabs IV needle into mom-in-law’s neck in hospital

By , TNN | Nov 16, 2012, 02.03 AM IST
MUMBAI: A 29-year-old man was arrested by the Vile Parle police on Tuesday for attempting to murder his mother-in-law by stabbing her five times in the neck with an intravenous fluid (IV) needle. Gaurav Manjrekar, the accused, was upset with the victim, Kalpana Achrekar, for allegedly instigating her daughter to obtain a divorce from him.

Manjrekar had tied the knot with Achrekar's daughter in December 2010. He stayed near Parleshwar society in Vile Parle (East) and was employed with a private firm at Bandra-Kurla Complex. But in July this year, he lost his job. He accused Achrekar (55) of creating a rift between him and his wife and using his jobless status to instigate her to obtain a divorce.

Achrekar is a resident of Dikshit Road, also in Vile Parle (East). She was suffering from chicken pox and tuberculosis and admitted to the intensive care unit of Nityanand Nursing Home on November 8.

On November 9, Manjrekar and his wife went to visit Achrekar at the hospital around 9am. The wife then left for her office while he left for home. Around 10.30am, Manjrekar returned to the hospital and entered Achrekar's room. He stabbed her with an IV needle in her throat five times. "She was not fully conscious when the attack took place but she did recollect that it was her son-in-law who was trying to kill her," a hospital staffer told TOI. "It's the first time in the history of the hospital that there's been an attempt to kill a patient inside the premises."

Achrekar fell unconscious after the attack. Manjrekar, while leaving the premises, told the hospital staff that Achrekar had tried to throttle herself. Accordingly, on November 9, the Vile Parle police registered a case of 'attempt to commit suicide' against Achrekar. However, when she regained consciousness on November 13, Achrekar narrated the facts to the police. Manjrekar was then arrested on charges of 'attempt to commit murder' under Section 307 of Indian Penal Code. He was remanded to police custody for two weeks by a metropolitan court on Wednesday.

Achrekar was shifted to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra two days after the attack when her condition improved. Manjrekar's father Ashok told the police his son was undergoing mental health treatment and joblessness had left him frustrated. Achrekar's family alleged Manjrekar previously tried to kill his wife and daughter.

Nov 11, 2012: Youth gets life term for raping 5-year-old girl

PTI | Nov 11, 2012, 11.41AM IST
NEW DELHI: A youth has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Delhi court for kidnapping and raping a five-year-old girl and then throwing her into a canal after trying to strangle her to death and burning her hair.

Additional sessions Judge Kamini Lau also directed the Delhi government to pay Rs one lakh as compensation to the victim for her rehabilitation saying the convict had committed a "ghastly" and "barbaric" crime and has given her a life-long trauma.

According to the prosecution, 25-year-old Shree Bhagwan had lured the minor in February this year to a secluded place on pretext of giving fruits and raped her there, after which he tried to strangulate her and burnt her hair and threw her in an over 15-feet-deep canal.

The girl was saved by a passerby, Sonu, who saw her clinging to plants on the canal's bank to save herself from falling.

Noticing the accused loitering near the canal in a suspicious manner, Sonu got him nabbed with help of others, and had him handed over to the police, who then lodged a case.

Refusing to show any leniency to the convict, the court said, "What worse the child could have faced? Having done all this, how can the convict now claim leniency? Any mercy shown to him under the given circumstances would be misplaced. Crime against children shakes the conscious of the society and sentencing is required to be stern."

"It was by sheer providence, her timely rescue by a good samaritan Sonu and the immediate medical aid provided to her that the child survived," the court said.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 60,000 on the convict saying, if realized, Rs 50,000 should be given to the victim.

SHIMLA: A dalit woman from Churah tehsil of Chamba district was gang-raped by five youths, including a minor, on Thursday night in Chamba town while she was heading towards a hospital for treatment.

While four accused managed to flee from the spot under the cover of darkness, one was arrested. A case was registered against all five accused on the complaint of the victim.
Thursday's incident has again exposed vulnerability of women in Himachal Pradesh. On an average, over 140 women are being subjected to rape in the hill state every year. Many feel that the number could be more as in many cases the victims and their family members prefer to keep silent fearing social stigma. While in 2011, the state had registered 131 cases of rape, this year till now 147 cases have already been registered.
In the last 10 years, 1,459 rape cases have been registered in Himachal. The state government earlier this year approved a support scheme for rape victims that would entail monetary aid and related help like provision for shelter, counseling, medical aid, legal assistance, education and vocational training.

The entire abduction-and-rape outrage occurred within a 3km radius of Naya Bans in outer Delhi. The case is especially shocking as the woman was assaulted in a moving Alto car early in the evening when Delhi and NCR witnessed the first Diwali rush.

Police said the 20-year-old was returning from a friend's house, hardly 150m from her own, when she was pulled inside the car by her neighbour, Raju. Three of his friends were reportedly in the car at the time.

"The main accused, Raju, forced her inside the Alto and told his friends to drive around. The trio, Rinku, Ashu and Sunny, sat in the front seats while Raju sexually assaulted the woman on the rear seat. All this time, the car moved within a 3km radius around Holambi Kalan, Naya Bans and Shahbad Dairy in outer Delhi. The men dumped her near her house at 5.30pm, and she called up the police at 5.32pm," said an officer investigating the case. However, the idea of three adults sharing the front seats of an Alto and driving unnoticed stretches the imagination.

While the woman's medical examination has confirmed rape, so far only one of the accused, Ashu, has been arrested. The Shahbad Dairy police have registered a case of rape and kidnapping and are looking for the three other men. Police teams across the city have been alerted about the Alto used in the crime. However, its ownership details have not been confirmed.

Sources said Raju had been pursuing the woman for a year and had started threatening her not to spurn him since last month. He allegedly called her up on Thursday night as well. But police say the family kept quiet about the harassment.

All the accused are residents of Holambi Kalan and Naya Bans and are aged around 20 years. "They are dropouts and jobless," said the investigating officer. He, however, insisted only Raju had raped the woman. "It was not a case of gang rape,'' he said.

The case has once again highlighted Delhi's poor record on women's safety with an average of 2.8 rapes reported per lakh population. Sociologists say it also points to the collapse of the community framework as the offenders in this case were the victim's neighbours.

Nov 11, 2012: Woman groped, assaulted in busy market area

MUMBAI: A 25-year-old woman was abused, slapped and manhandled in public after she yelled at a reportedly drunk man who had groped her in a crowded market area.

A resident of Antop Hill, the woman was on her way to King's Circle station at 9pm on Wednesday, when three men, who were allegedly drunk and are aged between 21 and 25, passed her by. One of them touched her inappropriately. When she shouted at the man, he turned back and started hurling abuses at her.

"I then hit him with my handbag. At this, the man slapped me a couple of times, pushed me down and pulled me by my hair. One of his friends joined him in beating me up," said the woman who works at a call center in Malad and was going to her office for the night shift.

A group of passersby tried to catch hold of the men, but two of them ran away. The crowd then thrashed the third man. "This man had neither touched me nor abused me. But as he was with the two who had misbehaved with me, the crowd beat him up. He also complained his wallet and gold chain were stolen," the woman told TOI.

By this time, someone from the crowd informed the police. After roughing up the man, the crowd tried to dissuade the woman from taking him to the police station. "But I wanted the offenders to be punished. While I was dragging the man to the police station, I spotted a police jeep," she said.

The police took the woman and the man to Antop Hill police station and took down her complaint. They grilled the man and picked up the other two. But the woman refused to leave, saying the two men had "manhandled her and slapped her and that it was only fair that she is allowed to slap them". "The police agreed. I slapped the men and told them that the next time they think about touching a woman, the sound of my slap will ring in their ears," the woman told TOI.

Nov 10, 2012: Chief minister blames girlfriends, cellphones for accidents

Press Trust of India | Updated: November 10, 2012 23:39 IST
Raipur: Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh today kicked up a controversy when he blamed "girlfriends, bikes and mobile phones" for the rising cases of road accidents in the state.

Speaking at a seminar on 'Road Safety' at a medical institute, he expressed concern over rising number of youths dying in road mishaps.

"If there is a good motorcycle, a good mobile and a good girlfriend then accidents are bound to happen," the chief minister said.

He said nearly 55 to 60 per cent road accident victims are youth. "It's a common sight to see youngsters driving two-wheelers while talking on cellphones which often leads to accidents.

Youths should avoid such habits," Singh said.

He lamented that while people are ready to spend thousands of rupees to buy motorcycles but are reluctant to purchase helmets which cost just a few hundred rupees.

Opposition Congress was quick to condemn Singh's remarks terming them as a ploy to divert attention from government's failure to curb road accidents.

Leader of Opposition in Assembly Ravindra Chaube said bad roads and corruption in transport department are main reasons for fatalities on road.
