MUMBAI: A 28-year-old man surrendered at the Mulund police early on Saturday, admitting to having murdered his wife. Dnyaneshwar Sarode, the accused, works as a delivery boy at a pathology laboratory. The police found the body of his wife, Shilpa, at the couple's residence in Ramgadh, Mulund West.

According to the police, Shilpa, 18, and Dnyaneshwar tied the knot in april 2012. Dnyaneshwar was an alcoholic. The couple would have frequent disputes as Dnyaneshwar did not like his wife's cooking. He also objected to her eating gutkha. Dnyaneshwar's parents, Tukaram and Rukminibai, stayed on the mezzanine floor of the same house. Investigations revealed that Dnyaneshwar also cast aspersions on his wife's character.

On Friday, after Dnyaneshwar returned home, the couple went out for a stroll, but ended up having yet another fight. "Shilpa went to bed after they returned home. Around 12.30 am, Dnyaneshwar used a large handkerchief to strangle her to death," said a police official. But after Shilpa's death, Dnyaneshwar panicked. He left home and went to the railway tracks at Mulund, planning to end his life. After two trains passed by, he couldn't summon the courage and went back home. He then contemplated jumping in the well and ending his life, but did not do so.

Around 5.30 am, Dnyaneshwar walked into the Mulund police station and confessed to the offence. Shilpa's body was sent to the Rajawadi post-mortem centre for an autopsy. Dnyaneshwar was arrested on murder charges. He was produced before a local court on Saturday.
