Jul 27, 2012: In-laws stab woman dead after brawl over water

TNN | Jul 27, 2012, 02.56AM IST
NEW DELHI: A family stabbed to death their daughter-in-law for water. The 23-year-old woman had a tiff with her brother-in-law after she claimed it was her turn to fill a bucket of water, much to the dislike of the man who insisted that he needed to bathe first.

The incident occurred around 8am at the JJ Colony in Wazirabad, northwest Delhi. The victim was Mumtaz. Her husband, Mukhtiyar, had tried to save her; but he was stabbed, too, and is in the hospital right now.

Mumtaz had gone to fill water when she found her brother-in-law bathing. "She requested him to stop for a while so that she could fill water. He refused and soon there was a verbal exchange. The brother-in-law was joined by his elder brother, Shakil alias Babloo, and his father, Roshan Khan; together, they started to beat the woman. Mumtaz cried out for help and Mukhtiyar responded.

He managed to end the fight; but Mumtaz alerted the cops from a nearby PCO. Upon her return, the three men attacked her again, and this time right outside her house. Two of them held her tight while Shakil stabbed her six times. Mukhtiyar tried to intervene, but they stabbed him too," claimed Brij Kishore, a witness.

Police rushed the two victims to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital where Mumtaz was declared dead. Mukhtiyar is stable but has been kept under observation. Roshan Khan is also in hospital. "We have nabbed all the accused and have many witnesses. We have also seized the murder weapon," said a senior police officer.

Sources claimed that the argument over water was just a pretext; trouble had been brewing between the two families for a while. "Cops are aware that the two families are involved in a property dispute," said a local who did not wish to be named.

Jul 27, 2012: Man gets life term for poisoning wife

TNN | Jul 27, 2012, 02.52AM IST
NEW DELHI: A trial court has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for murdering his wife by administering pesticide in a glass of water that he gave her to drink.

Relying on the depositions of his three minor children and also the medical evidence, district judge P S Teji held 38-year-old Vikas Gupta of Mandawali guilty of murder (Section 302) under IPC. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him.

"It has already been established that it was the accused (Gupta) who gave cockroach killing pesticide to the deceased after mixing it in water. So, the medical evidence as well as FSL report establishes the case of prosecution that the accused committed the murder of his wife by administering poison to her," the court said.

The court, while convicting Gupta, took on record the statements of the couple's three children who testified that their father, who was an alcoholic, had killed their mother in front of them.

In his testimony, the couple's son said when his mother started vomiting with froth coming out of her mouth, his father kept watching, refusing to anything to save her. He said his mother's condition deteriorated soon after she consumed the water which his father had given to her.

The court also rejected Gupta's plea of alibi that he was not present at home when his wife consumed poison. "The eye witnesses (children) have categorically deposed against the accused that he administered intoxicant to the deceased after mixing it in water. So, the plea of alibi taken by the accused appears to be false," the district judge said.

Gupta murdered his wife and then took her to hospital along with other family members, said the court, adding that the case, however, does not fall into the category of rarest of rare crime warranting death penalty. The court gave him life term noting that he has three children and old parents to support.

Jul 26, 2012: Man kicks wife to death for delivering baby girl

PTI | Jul 26, 2012, 09.18PM IST

COIMBATORE: In a shocking incident, a 22-year-old youth killed his 20-year-old wife near Kanuvai on Thursday for giving birth to a female baby last month.
The accused, S Pandiaraj, reportedly kicked his wife, G Nagajothi, in the abdomen repeatedly on Wednesday night and by Thursday morning she started to vomit blood. She breathed her last at a private hospital near Kanuvai. Police have arrested Pandiaraj and his mother, Dhanti, 50, in connection with the incident.
According to Vadavalli police, the couple has a two-year-old daughter, Aishwarya. Pandiaraj, a lorry driver, had married Nagajothi after courting her for a few months and the couple had a happy married life until the birth of their daughter. Their marital life started to crumble when her in-laws started taunting Nagajothi for 'failing' to give a baby boy.
It seems Pandiaraj started to ill- treat his wife after family members and some friends repeatedly taunted him for fathering a girl child. The brutalisation process was complete when the second baby also turned out to be a girl. As per the police complaint filed by the victim's father Ganesan, Pandiaraj used to assault Nagajothi almost every day and none, including his parents, cared to intervene and protect her.
The incident has left the civil society in the city in a shock as it reveals the deep-rooted prejudice against the girl child in the society. Long years of campaigns, by the state as well as NGOs, state policies favouring the girl child and regulations seem to have failed to alter the mindset of people.
Legal experts claimed that cases of gender discrimination are being reported from the upper middle class and educated sections of the society. "The old social outlook which tends to tilt towards the male gender is highly prevalent even among the educated sections of the society. It is deep rooted in their mindset and aggressive awareness campaigns to promote equal status forwomen should be ensured at least in the coming years,' said M Vennila, a city-based advocate.
Sociologists expect gender prejudice to decline as more and more women attain economic independence. The notion of girl child being a burden on the parents especially at the time of marriage would then cease. "When more and more women become economically independent, the social situation and prejudices are also expected to change,' said T Srinivasan, retired psychology professor, Government Arts College, Coimbatore. Superstitious beliefs prevalent among certain communities are also cited for gender discrimination and cruelty towards women.

Investigators learnt through the locals that Bansode was having an illicit relationship with Kamble and the matter worsened around 1.30am on Tuesday after his visits at the victim's flat. "Bansode frequently visited the victim's flat after her father passed away. The victim and her mother considered him as a family member. However he was having an illicit relationship with the girl and her mother too," people from the locality said.
The incident occurred half-an-hour after Bansode stepped into Kamble's flat situated on the fifth floor. On seeing Bansode, Kamble's mother stepped out of the house and stayed in the common passage on the floor.
"In the complaint, Kamble's mother Nirmala said that Bansode has set her daughter on fire. Meanwhile Bansode claimed that he suffered the burns when he tried to save her who poured kerosene in front of him and lit match-stick," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

MADDUR: A 19-year-old girl who resisted a molestation attempt by a group of youths was kicked out of a moving train by them near Maddur on Tuesday afternoon. She survived miraculously, but suffered grievous injuries.

Kavya (name changed) was pushed out of the Yeshwantpur-Mysore Express when it was travelling over the Kolli bridge, on the Shimsha river. She fell onto the dry river bed 25 feet below.

A passenger who saw the girl being thrown out called Maddur police. She was taken to the Mandya Institute of Medical Sciences, where she is being treated for injuries to the head, backbone and legs.

Scores of passengers who remained mute spectators to the molestation attempt later thrashed the culprits. Two youths were taken into custody at the Mandya station. Two others were picked up at Pandavapura later on suspicion of accompanying those caught earlier.

Kavya said from her hospital bed: "When the train was approaching Maddur station, four youths began teasing me and sexually harassing me. They passed lewd remarks and tried to molest me. When I said I would inform police, they pushed me out."

An employee of a garment factory in Bangalore, Kavya was on leave. She was heading back to her home in Vidyaranyapuram, Mysore. An orphan, she stays with her grandmother in Mysore.

Kavya boarded the general compartment at Kengeri. The four youths, who are believed to have entered the coach at Ramanagaram, began teasing her.

When Kavya rebuked them, one of the youths tried to molest her.

She got up from her seat and went near the door. The youths followed her and continued to misbehave. They pushed her out when she said she would inform police.

As the train had just left Maddur, it was moving at a slow speed on the bridge.

Police said Kavya might not have survived if she had hit a rock on the river bank. Luckily, she fell on the dry river bed.

A passenger said the youths literally kicked her out. Another passenger claimed: "If she had brought it to our notice, we could have done something."

The miscreants were identified as Akbar, 24, Imran, 21, Shuban and Ahmed — all from Kalyanagiri locality in Mysore.

TIMES VIEW

We need no gender assessment study to state that women find life outside their homes increasingly unsafe. Commuting on buses and trains is fraught with risks too, not to talk of general discomfort, thanks to overcrowding and lack of facilities. This case is more shocking because it brings to light the deteriorating social climate in Karnataka where hooligans can dare commit such heinous acts. What's worrisome for citizens is the government -- whose members are constantly squabbling over positions of power -- seems to be in no hurry to wake up to realities. Along with policy-makers, law-enforcers too have a big job on their hands in creating a citizenfriendly society.

BEIJING: Indian officials managing a youth delegation found themselves struggling to curb rampant harassment of girls by a section of the boys during their week-long tour of China. Desperate officials were forced to separate men and women in separate buses to avoid an untoward incident, according to some of the delegations members.

"I wonder if the youth affairs ministry chose some of the boys on the basis of their ability to use abusive language and harass girls," one of the women in the delegation told TNN. The 100-member team returned to India Saturday after spending 10 days at the invitation of the Chinese government.

Ministry secretary Nita Chowdhury told reporters in Beijing delegation members were chosen on the basis of their community service and certain special qualities out of different organizations like the government-backed National Social Service and the Nehru Yuva Kendrabesides different political parties and university outfits.

Women members complained to both Chaudhury and the ministry in New Delhi before officials stepped in and asked some of the boys to behave, TNN was told. At one stage, a section of the troublemakers were ordered to keep out of a sightseeing tour and stay in their hotel rooms.

"Some of us were feeling ashamed being seen with these boys. We were hoping officials from the Nehru Kendra and the ministry were more strict. But they seemed helpless as well," a male member of the delegation said.

Officials talked about punishing and blacklisting the trouble makers, but it was a pointless threat because no one is hardly ever picked up on a youth exchange program a second time.

Some of the youth delegation, which is supposed to represent the best qualities of Indian youth, made lewd remarks on the dressing style of some Chinese girls and called them "chinkis".

They also nagged at girls in the delegation from the northeast. By the time the delegation moved to Inner Mangolia as part of the tour, the misbehaving boys began commenting on some north Indian girls as well, sources in the delegation said.

The tour also caused differences between the youth affairs and external affairs ministry over the Chinese decision to refuse visa to a member from Arunachal Pradesh. The external affairs ministry was peeved because it had been kept in the dark over the issue, sources said.

The second wife of deceased, Anita Nahar, had a narrow escape as the bullet brushed past her right shoulder. She was rushed to GMCH-32 and discharged after preliminary treatment.

The incident took place in Sector 44 around 8.15am when Anita along with her daughter, Enna, 11, was going to Chandigarh Baptist School, Sector 45, where she teaches and her daughter is a student. Enna is from Anita's first marriage.

The deceased was living with his first wife Meenu and their six-year-old daughter. Incidentally, it was his daughter's birthday on Friday.

Eyewitnesses said Samoun shot at Anita, who was on a two-wheeler, from his car. Due to this Anita lost her balance and they fell. Thinking that she's dead, Samoun fled. Police said a few minutes later, Samoun was found dead in his car. A country made weapon along with two live cartridges was recovered from the car.

Though the man's first wife Meenu said she had no idea of Samoun's marriage to Anita, sources said the woman was aware but had adjusted to the circumstances. Samoun was the youngest of six brothers who stayed in a rented accommodation in Shiv Enclave, Baltana.
