BAREILLY: Taking letters written by a dowry victim complaining of harassment before her death as evidence, a local court here has sentenced the husband and mother-in-law to life imprisonment.
Surjit Balmiki and his mother were awarded the punishment and a fine of Rs 25,000 each was imposed on them by Additional district judge Surendra Prasad Misra yesterday for demanding dowry from Vinita.
According to the prosecution, the court took note of the letters when the father of the victim Ajit Balmiki and some other witnesses turned hostile.
He had lodged an FIR on March 12, 2006, the day Vinita died, against the husband, mother-in-law and brother-in-law, they said.
