BHUBANESWAR: A man allegedly set his "live-in partner" on fire in Kharavela Nagar police station area in the city on Friday.
Police sources said a group of school girls rescued the woman after they saw her running for cover near the exhibition ground. Since the woman was running on the busy road near Ram Mandir, several vehicles reportedly stopped for a few minutes, witnessing the horrible sight.
The woman, Sanjukta Mathur, was later admitted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, in a critical condition. She has sustained 90 per cent burns.
Sources said the girls, part of a scouts and guide troop, covered her with a piece of cloth and doused the flames and alerted the police.
Sanjukta was staying with Dhirendra in a hut raised by them near the exhibition ground. They were not married. While Sanjukta was married to another man and had a son, Dhirendra too was married to another woman.
The partners, who originally hailed from Phulbani district, allegedly had a strained relationship. Sanjukta had earlier filed a complaint of torture against Dhirendra with Mahila police. After a heated argument on Friday, Dhirendra allegedly sprayed kerosene on her and set her on fire, police said. He is is absconding since the incident. Police said they had started a manhunt.
