RANCHI: A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a Class X student, who was her neighbor, in Giridih district late on Thursday evening.
The incident takes place at a time when the nationwide debate over lowering the age of juvenile offenders in rape to 16 from 18 hots up.
The girl was rushed to a nearby hospital after her family members found her profusely bleeding. Doctors confirmed rape.
An FIR was then lodged with Gawan police. The accused has gone traceless after the incident. The accused and the victim are from Chakgawa village and are known to each other.
SP Giridih A V Homkar said that the police is searching for the accused. "The accused and the victim are neighbours," said Homkar.
The boy, who is also a minor, was playing with the girl in the evening. After their friends had left the place, he persuaded the girl to accompany him to a certain location. The boy led her to a secluded place near the fields and forced himself on her, said police officials.
The boy left the girl crying and bleeding and decamped from the place. The girl brought the matter to the family members who then informed police which registered an FIR.
