CHENNAI: A marriage broker who set a teenager ablaze because she refused to marry the man he had found was arrested on Saturday night.

The 17-year-old girl is now battling for her life at the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Police said Balkis Banu, 35, had asked marriage broker Sanamullah, 32, to fix an alliance for her daughter. Sanamullah, who was also their neighbour, brought a prospective groom's photograph within a few days.

Though the groom's family liked the girl, the girl was unhappy with the proposal and refused to marry him.

On Saturday night, Sanamullah visited Banu's house to finalise the proposal. "She refused to marry him as the man appeared to be much older than her," said Abdul, her cousin.

While Sanamullah was arguing with the girl, he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. The girl's 10-year-old brother saw this and alerted the neighbours. The neighbours nabbed Sanamullah.

The girl was admitted to Kilpauk hospital with 35% burns. Based on a complaint, R K Nagar police arrested Sanamullah on IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) and are interrogating him.
