Jan 26, 2013: TV producer held for ‘raping’ actress

By V Narayan & Bharti Dubey, TNN | Jan 26, 2013, 12.53 AM IST
MUMBAI: The Powai police on Friday arrested a former television executive producer of a production house for allegedly sexually assaulting a 28-year-old TV serial actress who works under the same banner on December 2. The victim, though, lodged the complaint only on Wednesday - a month and a half after the alleged crime. The actress said she did not lodge the complaint initially fearing stigma. She filed a complaint after he allegedly started making threatening calls after the production house sacked him based on her husband's complaint.

The police said both the complainant and the suspect have undergone medical examination to ascertain the veracity of the complaint.

Powai police senior inspector Bajirao Bhosale told TOI on Friday that the suspect was arrested and booked under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 376 (rape) and 506 (II) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. "The suspect claimed that he was in a relationship with the actress, but was not ready to cooperate and revealed very little about the incident," said Bhosale.

The victim told her husband about the alleged sexual assault four days after it reportedly took place in a makeup room of Katharsis Studios, Powai. In her complaint, she said, "Around 6.30am, the executive producer called me and said my shoot was scheduled at 7.30am. He asked me to reach Jogeshwari railway station as soon as possible, as a bus was scheduled to pick me up there."

She added, "He called me at least three to four times till I reached Jogeshwari. Around 7.45am, I reached the station and checked for the bus. Instead, I saw him waiting on his bike. I refused to travel with him and said I will take an autorickshaw. But he forced me to accompany him on the bike."

When TOI tried to contact the actress and her husband, they sent an SMS saying they were on their way to Gwalior.

Jameel Khan, the show's supervising producer, said, "The allegations are baseless. We sacked the employee immediately after her husband complained to our producer. I have the call sheet and her signature of entry and exit from the studio. She shot the entire day and the time she has alleged the incident took place, there were about 20 people from the production house. No one heard of anything. She should've immediately complained, which she didn't.''

A police officer, though, said, "The accused asked her to go to makeup room number 2 and started assigning work to the ground staff. A few minutes later, he entered the room and raped her. He warned the victim that if she raised her voice, she would kill her and her daughter."

Khan said, "The actor and her husband are only trying to gain publicity. I can tell you one thing nothing happened on our set."

Jan 25, 2013: Drunk man molests daughter, axed to death by father-in-law

TNN | Jan 25, 2013, 11.29 AM IST
INDORE: A man was hacked to death by his father-in-law and his two minor sons in the wee hours of Thursday when he tried to molest his teenage daughter under the influence of liquor.

According to city superintendent of police Rajesh Dhandotiya, the incident happened after midnight when the deceased Hukumchand Balai, 40, under the influence of liquor tried to molest his daughter. The harried daughter rushed to the house of her maternal grandfather Kaloo Ram, 55, who stayed in the neighbourhood. When he tried to pacify Hukumchand, the situation turned ugly as the deceased started abusing him as well.

Sunil, the minor son of the deceased also supported his grandfather, but Hukumchand continued with his abusive language and wanted that his daughter should support him. Seeing that his son-in-law was not relenting, Kaloo hacked Hukumchand with an axe. Kaloo was joined by Sunil and Ajay (Kaloo's son). After killing Hukumchand, all the three surrendered at Banganga police station.

"The deceased has been harassing his teenage daughter for the last one year," said Dhandotiya adding that the FIR was lodged by Anita Bai, the wife of the deceased.

Jan 25, 2013: Man gets life term till death for kidnapping, raping minor

PTI | Jan 25, 2013, 05.17 PM IST
GWALIOR: A 40-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment till death by a local court for raping a minor girl repeatedly for nearly a week after kidnapping her.

The sentence was awarded by first additional session judge Laxmi Sharma on Thursday to Ram Kishan for raping a 11-year-old girl after abducting her last year.

According to prosecution, pronouncing the verdict, the judge said that the convict should spend rest of his life behind the bars.

"Any attack on women that violates her privacy always left a scar on her mind and after that leading life with that pang is as painful as death. Showing any sympathy towards such criminals is against the interest of the law and the society and such kind of crimes also affects the morality of the society. Therefore, such persons deserves a harsh punishment," the judgement said.

The accused was known to the victim's family and on June 20, 2012, he went to her residence in search of her father's maternal uncle and stayed back. Next day, he lured the girl to a market for purchasing dresses and later took her to a forest and raped her.

After this he went to Rajasthan's Bara town along with her and again sexually abused the minor. Later Kishan brought her to Radhapura village in Madhya Pradesh and again raped her and subsequently dumped her in an agriculture field.

A week later, the victim was found by an old woman to whom she narrated the entire incident following which she was taken to her (victim's) residence. Her father then filed a report in the Mohna Police Station Shivpuri district.

Jan 25, 2013: Neighbour threatens woman with 'Nirbhaya fate', cops register NC

By , TNN | Jan 25, 2013, 12.55 AM IST
MUMBAI: A 48-year-old chartered accountant who complained to police of harassment from her neighbour over a parking space dispute in her building, was shocked when Mulund police told her they would register an FIR only in a case of molestation or something more serious. Police refused to file an FIR even though a day later the neighbor abused her publicly and threatened she 'would meet the same fate as Delhi's Nirbhaya' for complaining against him. On both occasions, police registered non-cognizable offences.

Mulund-resident Vanita Kangya went to the police station twice to complain against a computer engineer who lives in her building, Willow Twin Tower CHS at Vasant Garden, Mulund (west), and has allegedly been harassing and threatening her since 2010 over parking of their vehicles. The dispute worsened after he allegedly scratched and damaged her new car. She claimed he also warned her of his political connections. "As he was not ready to resolve the matter, nor listen to society members, I was forced to approach police for help. I was made to wait from 7pm to 10pm in the police station on Wednesday, after which police took down an NC instead of an FIR, though I told them the man threatened me with dire consequences. Worse, a policeman said they will take an FIR only in cases of molestation and more serious offences," Kangya told TOI on Thursday. Former IPS officer-turned-lawyer Y P Singh said the cops should not have spoken to her in such a manner. "Departmental action should be taken against those found guilty and they should be booked under IPC section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman)," said Singh.

On Thursday morning, learning that Kangya had filed an NC against him, the neighbour allegedly abused her before society members and security guards and threatened she would meet the same fate as Nirbhaya, whose brutal gangrape in Delhi in December 2012 and death spurred protests across the country. When Kangya went to the police station again on Thursday, she claimed police initially refused to take her complaint, but finally registered another NC when she threatened to approach the DCP. However, Singh said Thursday's incident was serious enough for police to have registered an FIR under section 294 of the IPC. Kangya claimed police told her unless there were three NCs against a person, it was not possible to register an FIR.

However, Mulund police senior inspector Jivajirao Jadhav refuted Kangya's claim. "We have taken down two NCs in the case. It is a civil matter and the person has to get in touch with society members to clear the problem between flat-owners in the building. The entire matter is over parking and was not a serious offence." He claimed both NCs, on January 23 and 24, were recorded promptly.

Jadhav that Kangya has claimed that some cops informed her that they lodge FIR only in cases of molestation and above which is serous, he said that it is wrong and the person is trying to misguide this paper. While Kangya said that the duty officer who took down the NC explained that they will take the FIR only after she lodges three NCs against the person mentioned in the NC. "Cops also said that it is a civil matter and should be handled by themselves and should not come to the police to get it resolve," she said.

Raja Salian, a managing committee member of the housing society, said, "We tried to resolve the problem and even gave enough space for the person to park his vehicle. For his benefit we realigned the parking place with more space to accommodate his car, but he continues to create a problem."

Jan 24, 2013: Uttar Pradesh judge accused of molesting teen to be questioned today

Reported by Anant R Zanane, Edited by Ashish Mukherjee | Updated: January 24, 2013 10:52 IST
Gonda, Uttar Pradesh: A judge in Uttar Pradesh who has been accused of molesting a 13-year-old in his chambers will be questioned today by the additional district judge of Gonda.

The teen, whose family has filed a complaint with the police, will also be questioned about the allegations by the additional district judge. Her parents will be present during the questioning.

The local police in Gonda, a three- hour drive from the state capital of Lucknow, says it cannot register a case against the judge without permission from the Allahabad High Court. However, experts say that's not true.

The Allahabad High Court has asked the additional district judge at the Gonda court to investigate the allegations against the judge, both by the teen and a 21-year-old woman.

Both women claim that the judge molested them on Monday in his chambers. The older woman says she did not try to file a police complaint because she was nervous about taking on a judge.

Both the alleged victims were testifying to the judge in cases of kidnapping.
