Dec 7, 2011: Father hangs 3 children to death, ends life

, TNN | Dec 7, 2011, 04.00AM IST
PUNE: In a horrifying incident, a man hangedhis three children - aged four, six and eight - to death before ending his own life, also by hanging, at his four-bedroom flat at Ramkrishna Apartments in Baner on Tuesday morning.

The man, Chandrashekhar Ranaware (44), also hanged his eldest daughter, aged 10, in another bedroom, but she managed to set herself free and rushed out of the flat. Ranaware's wife had left the house a fortnight back after they had a bitter quarrel.

Ranaware, who had left his job at Ammunition Factory, Khadki some four or five years back, owned the entire front portion of Ramkrishna Apartments. He earned good rent from a shop and three flats he had leased out. He lived on the third floor.

A disconsolate Varsha (32), Ranaware's wife, told TOI on returning to Pune from her father's house at Manchar that her husband would suspect her character and often beat her and the children.

Ranaware's nephew, Mayur Kamble (20) of Pimpri, was in the house till 8 am. He told TOI that he has been staying with the Ranawares for the last two years. However, that morning, Ranware forced him to go back to Pimpri, saying he would kill the children if he didn't.

Ranaware's eldest daughter, Dhanashree, who had a miraculous escape, said her father first took the youngest child, Shivam (4), to one bedroom and later Shreyas (6) to another bedroom. He then grabbed hold of Dhanashree and hanged her with a piece of his wife's saree in the third bedroom.

Dhanashree said she managed to set herself free when her father left the room. When she came to the hall, she was horrified to see both her sister, Komal (8), and her father hanging from a hook in the ceiling. Dhanashree said she rushed to her uncle's house, which is in another wing of the building, and told them of the incident. She also called up her mother at Manchar.

Ranaware's cousin, Arjun, went to the flat but rushed out on seeing the two bodies in the hall. He immediately contacted the police, who came to the flat and brought down all four bodies. While the children had been hanged with pieces of Varsha's saree, Ranaware had used a rope to end his life.

Inspector S B Navale of the Chatushrungi police station told TOI that no suicide note was found in the flat. "We suspect Ranaware committed the gruesome murders following the tiff with his wife. We have registered offences under sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code," he said.

Speaking to TOI, Kamble said Ranaware would often quarrel with his Varsha. "Three days after Varsha left for Manchar, Ranaware told his relatives that he was going to kill the children and also end his life. We panicked and sent him and the children to his sister Jyoti Oval's place in Daruli village in Paud," he said.

Kamble said that Ranaware and the children returned from Daruli on Sunday. "Since Monday night, Ranaware was telling me to go back to Pimpri. On Tuesday, both of us got up around 4 am, with him continuously telling me to leave. I got worried and told him I wanted to stay with the children. However, around 7 am, he threatened to kill the children if I did not leave. I then boiled milk for the children and left around 8 am. I got to know of the incident around 11 am and rushed to Aundh hospital," he said. Kamble said both Dhanashreeand Komal were studying in Murkute school at Baner and Shreyas in Bharati Vidyapeeth school at Balewadi. "However, Ranaware had not sent the children to school since Varsha left the house," he said.

Ranaware's cousin, Ahinsak, said Ramkrishna Apartments was a family-owned property. "The front portion was in Chandrashekhar's possession. He had given the ground-floor shop on rent to a popular eatery, the first floor to a private company and two other flats to families. He earned a handsome rent and was also involved in land dealings," he said.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone-III) Dnyaneshwar Chavan and assistant commissioner of police (Chatushrungi division) Vishnu Mane visited the spot.

Nov 27, 2011: Spurned lover repeatedly stabs girl before public in West Bengal

TNN | Nov 27, 2011, 04.40AM IST
KANKINARA (NORTH 24 PARGANAS): In yet another incident of violence against girls, a 17-year-old student was allegedly stabbed by ayouth on Saturday after she turned down his repeated marriage proposals. The girl has been hospitalized with serious injuries while police raids are on to nab the 22-year-old youth.
The incident took place around 6.30 am nearKankinara Bazaar in North 24 Parganas. The girl had gone to fetch water from a roadside tap. She was standing in the queue when Chottu, the youth, allegedly teased her. She shouted at him and told him to behave himself, but Chottu persisted. Several others were standing in the queue, but none of them spoke up.
This bolstered Chottu's courage and he allegedly proposed marriage to the girl. Thinking she had had enough, the girl asked him to leave at once, but at that Chottu allegedly whipped out a knife and stabbed her repeatedly. As the knife struck her in the shoulder, hands and back, the girl started screaming in a desperate bid to get help.
As more people rushed in, Chottu fled the spot. The girl was taken to Bhatpara state general hospital, where she received nine stitches. Her condition is still critical. The girl, a Class XI student, was to take an examination in school on Saturday.
Locals alleged that the youth, who lives two houses away from the girl, had been teasing her for the last two weeks. He had apparently been proposing marriage to her, which she consistently turned down. A complaint was lodged at Jagaddal police station, but Chottu has gone into hiding.
The girl's father, a schoolteacher, has been out of station for some days, said her mother. "We did not know that the youth used to tease my daughter. She told me about it only on Friday and I immediately went to his house and asked his family to ensure that he didn't tease her in future. It seems the boy tried to kill my daughter because of that," said the girl's mother.
The girl said from her hospital bed that the youth would tease her whenever she was on her way to school. "I had warned him several times, but he did not pay any heed. He continued to tease me whenever he saw me on the streets. When I went to fetch water today, he started teasing me. I shouted at him, but before I realized anything, he suddenly attacked me with the knife," she said.
Police said they have received a complaint and are conducting raids to nab the youth. Prima facie, they said, the youth retaliated after the girl rejected his marriage proposals.
Several cases of molestation and attacks on people trying to save the victims have rocked the state in recent times. On February 13, 16-year-old Rajib Das was brutally murdered in Barasat after he tried to stop some goons from molesting his sister. A couple of weeks later, a Madhyamik examinee was teased and molested by a group of rowdies in Chetla. Her brother, who was accompanying her home, was punched and thrashed mercilessly when he tried to push them away.
Again, on June 23, two men trying to protect schoolgirls from eve-teasers were stabbed in Howrah. Only 10 days back, three girls were allegedly molested by two inebriated youths near a country liquor shop at Higlia near Ashokenagar, North 24-Parganas, after which angry locals demolished the liquor shop and set it on fire.

Nov 25, 2011: Girlfriend's kin kill youth in Hooda's village

, TNN | Nov 25, 2011, 05.33AM IST
ROHTAK: In an apparent case of honour killing, an engineering student was allegedly lynched by family members of a girl when the two were spotted together in the village community centre, in chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's Sanghi village, on Wednesday night.
Deepak Sharma (21), resident of Dimana village in Jhajjar district, had come to meet his girlfriend around midnight. Sources said that a family member saw the girl going out of the house and followed her. He then informed others, who found the couple cozying up and took strong exception to it.
While the girl was sent back home, Deepak was battered to death. Police have arrested the girl's mother Munni Devi on the complaint of victim's father Ramphal Singh. Four other accused - brothers Pradeep and Rajesh, uncle Wazir Singh and neighbour Hawa Singh - are on the run.
A police spokesperson said that three teams have been constituted to nab the culprits. He admitted that preliminary inquiry indicated that the victim, who was a third year engineering student in a private college in Ladrawan village of Jhajjar district, had an affair with the girl, a school student, and had come to meet her.
Sources said the girl's family was enraged about the couple's rendezvous. "They seemed to have thrashed the youth in a fit of rage which led to his death and then fled, leaving the body at the community centre. The motorcycle, on which the youth had come to the village, was recovered from outside the centre," police said.
