New Delhi: A councillor in Delhi's municipal corporation hanged herself at her home in Nangloi area in West Delhi this morning after strangling her baby daughter, who was one and half year old.

Her family alleges that her in-laws harassed her repeatedly over dowry and were unhappy that she had delivered a girl. The family members of the victim have registered a complaint against her in-laws alleging that she was murdered because of dowry.

"Satyam's in-laws were demanding Rs.10 lakh. We went to Delhi to bring her back to Bulandshahr. They refused to let her come and said they will not leave her until their demands were fulfilled," Satyam's elder brother Nishat Yadav told IANS.

The cops however said it appears to be a case of suicide. "It seems she hung herself after strangulating her daughter. But we cannot confirm anything before the post mortem," Deputy Police Commissioner V Renganathan said.
