CHANDIGARH: A woman has been arrested from Punjab's industrial town of Phagwara for allegedly forcing her minor daughter into prostitution, police said on Thursday.

Dimple had forced her 13-year-old daughter into the flesh trade in connivance with Rani, the owner of a beauty parlour on Gaushala Road in Phagwara, 120 km from here, a police official said.

The mother was arrested on Wednesday. A case of rape and conspiracy has been registered against her and the beauty parlour owner under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Station House Officer (SHO) AS Chahal said.

He said the police were trying to track down the men who had sexually exploited the minor. They too are likely to be booked.

Police said Dimple, who had divorced her husband over six years ago, pushed her daughter into prostitution nearly six months back. She had stopped her daughter from going to school and started sending her to the beauty parlour.

The matter came to light on Wednesday after the girl left her home in Hadiabad locality following a quarrel with her mother. Some people later saw a man pulling her into a car on Plahi Road and reported the matter to the police.

The police found that the man pulling at the girl was a driver sent by her mother to get her back. When the police questioned the girl, she spilled the details about her ordeal.

Jun 30, 2011: Qazi suspended over minor's marriage

TNN | Jun 30, 2011, 03.37am IST
HYDERABAD: Taking a serious note of the spurt in contract marriages, the government on Wednesday suspended Ali Abdullah Rafai alias Abid, the qazi, who had reportedly forced a minor girl to marry an Arab on Sunday night.
Rafai is notorious for arranging and facilitating marriages between aged Arab nationals and impoverished Hyderabadi girls. In numerous cases he is said to have prepared the divorce documents along with 'nikah nama' so as to allow the Arabs to dump their Indian wives and flee whenever they wished. Preparation of divorce papers at the time of nikah is impermissible under Shariat (Islamic law).
In the latest incident, Rafai had offered to pay to one Naseema Begum of Talabkatta Rs 4 lakh for giving her 17-year-old niece Asiya Begum in marriage to an unidentified Arab. When he learnt that Naseema Begum has developed cold feet after agreeing to his offer he sent his son Mohammed to forcibly bring Asiya Begum to his house. Asiya Begum resisted Mohammed's attempts to take her with him. Later, Naseema Begum lodged a complaint with Bhavani Nagar police station acting over which the police raided his house and arrested him. His son is still absconding.
Rafai is said to enjoy the patronage of some politicians and police officials. When he came under cloud a few years ago, he managed to wriggle out of the cases that had been slapped against him. After getting his name cleared, he reportedly persuaded the minority welfare department to make him Sadr (chief) qazi for performing the marriages of all Arabs of Indian origin, Shafayee (a school of belief among Sunni Muslims) and general Muslims in the city. When the news of the government agreeing to Rafai's proposal spread, many senior qazis protested against the proposed move. The government was forced to abandon its plan.
According to sources, state wakf board chairman Afazal Biyabani has called for a meeting with the qazis on Saturday with a view to find out ways to curb the contract marriage menace. He also held a meeting with the city police commissioner A K Khan on Wednesday. The two have reportedly discussed about the possibility of making the marriage performance laws more stringent.

Jun 30, 2011: Rajasthan professor demanded sexual favours

NDTV Correspondent, Updated: June 30, 2011 12:56 IST

Jaipur: In a huge embarrassment for teachers across the country, a professor at the Rajasthan University has been arrested for allegedly demanding sexual favours from his student.

The victim has alleged that her research guide Dr R K Singhal of the Physics department was harassing her for months.

The professor asked the girl to have sexual relations with him if she wanted to complete her PhD. Besides molesting her in February, Singhal and his colleague S N Dolia allegedly even blackmailed the student by morphing her face onto some obscene pictures.

"While submitting her PhD thesis, the victim was asked for sexual favours by the teacher. Our preliminary investigation has found that the allegations are true and so we have arrested the Professor," said BL Soni, Commissioner of Police, Jaipur.

Students at the Rajasthan University are enraged. "The way a teacher has asked for sexual favours is shameful for our university. We won't tolerate this," said one of them.

Outraged students organised a 'bandh' on the campus, demanding the sacking of the accused teachers. Shockingly, despite the victim complaining about the teacher's misconduct, the university authorities took no action initially. It was only after the girl lodged a police complaint that the accused teacher was arrested. Both Singhal and his colleague Dolia were later suspended from the university.

Besides suspending the two teachers, the university has also asked two retired Judges of the High Court to probe this shocking issue.

The sordid case has shaken everyone at Rajasthan's oldest and most prestigious university. In a country where teachers have been revered as 'gurus' and the relation between a teacher and a student has been considered as a 'sacred' one for centuries, this incident represents a terrible breach of trust.
