MUMBAI: A 13-year-old tribal girl from Virar was allegedly raped by her uncle with whom she had been staying for the last eight years after the death of her parents. The crime came to light after the girl attempted suicide last week.
The victim lost her parents when she was five. She and her younger brother moved in with their uncle, Sanjay Vaye (30), who was their mother's first cousin.
On June 22, the girl, a class VIII student, attempted to hang herself at her home in Agashi in Virar (W). A neighbour saw her and persuaded her to open the door. The girl finally opened the door but refused to say why she had attempted suicide.
It was only after her mother's sister took her into confidence did the girl reveal that she had been raped by her uncle on several occasions over the last year. Vaye had moved to Boisar last year with his wife and daughter after he got a job in a private firm there. He left the victim and her brother with his mother at Agashi. The victim said that Vaye used to rape her when he came to visit them. She tried to confide in Vaye's wife, but Vaye threatened her and warned her against telling anyone about the rape.
The victim's aunt lodged a complaint with the police after which Vaye was arrested. The victim has undergone medical tests at a Thane hospital and the police are awaiting the reports, said senior inspector Yusuf Bhagwan. According to investigating officer Rajendra Panhale, Vaye has been booked under Section 375 of the IPC (rape).
