FATEHABAD: A man from Haryana's Fatehabad district allegedly sold his 16-year-old daughter for Rs 50,000 to a man to marry her though she was already engaged to another boy. The police rescued the girl and arrested her father following a complaint filed by her stepbrothers.

The girl belongs to Peerthala village. After she was sold by her father on Monday, the police rescued her the next day from Jind.

Her stepbrothers Jagroop and Ram Swaroop Singh alleged that their father Deshraj Singh had married twice after their mother died and was an alcoholic. Jagroop told the police that his sister was already engaged. After arresting him, police questioned Deshraj to learn about the girl's whereabouts and then rescued her.

The girl told TOI that her father took her to Jind to buy her a new dress. "When we reached Jind, he handed me over to a man. I was told he had bought me for Rs 50,000," she said.
