JAIPUR: A woman was arrested in Rajasthan on the charge of killing her one-year-old daughter by throwing her into a well, police said Saturday.
The incident took place Friday in a village near Guda Engla town of Pali district, some 300 km from here.
The woman, identified as Kuldeep Kaur, was arrested Saturday after her husband Jagtar Singh registered an FIR against her implicating her in the murder.
The woman has claimed that she had given an overdose of a medicine to the girl, Rajveer Kaur, due to which she died. "She claims that fearing that her husband would beat her up, the woman dumped her body into the well," a police officer told IANS on Saturday.
However, police suspect that the child might have been killed as it was a girl.
"The cases of female foeticide and infanticide are quite rampant in this area. We are probing whether the mother killed Rajveer because she was a girl," said the officer.
On Friday, Jagtar Singh approached the police alleging that his wife had thrown their daughter into a well in the village.
"The girl's body was recovered from the well and a post-mortem was conducted. The initial report suggests that the girl had not died due to an overdose of any medicine," said the officer.
He added that the police are looking into the possibility of strangulation.
The woman was arrested and booked under section 302 of Indian Penal Code for homicide, police said.
Rajasthan has recently been in news for increasing cases of female foeticide and female infanticide.
According to Census 2011, Rajasthan has 883 girls between the age of 0-6 for every 1,000 boys. The child sex ratio in 2001 was 909.
Alarmed over the state's skewed sex ratio, the state government recently announced steps to curb pre-natal sex determination tests at ultrasound clinics.
The steps include increasing the number of health department inspection teams and equipping them with devices like hidden cameras and voice recorders.
The state government has also increased the amount of money given as incentive to a person who complains about errant ultrasound clinics.
