Siddhant Rai, a former member of Bihar legislative assembly, arrived in the city along with some relatives on late Saturday from Patna. Rai approached Vibhuti Khand police and complained against Nivedita's in-laws including her husband Manoj Rai, father-in-law Markandey Rai, mother-in-law and two more relatives. Manoj is Uttar Pradesh head of leading distillery Seagram and looks after the company's interests in, Bihar and Uttarakhand. The police booked the duo on charges of murder and dowry demand. The police have also called other accused to record their statements and take action accordingly.
Nivedita got married to Manoj Rai in 2005 and the couple has a seven-year-old son who stays with Manoj's mother at Varanasi. Manoj maintained that his son stayed and studied in Varanasi because he did not want his life to get disturbed since his job required him to travel often and get stationed at different locations for months at a stretch.
Nivedita's family said Manoj had separated her from their son intentionally to harass her. Vidya Sagar Mishra, circle official of Gomtinagar said the two had developed bitter relations over the years but it is only after a probe that the truth will come out. It was noted that Nivedita did not have a cell phone. On Saturday morning, she entered her husband's room and told him that she was talking to him for the last time as she had mixed insecticide in the food she cooked and consumed it to end her life.
