MUMBAI: When his ex-girlfriend asked him to lend her Rs 10,000, a 24-year-old web camera trader readily agreed on a condition that the amount should be repaid on time. However, when she failed to keep her promise, he called her over to his shop, where he got intimate with her and recorded the act. Subsequently, when she did return the money, the man demanded another Rs 15 lakh from her, threatening to upload the video online.
Following a complaint by the woman, the south region police and the state ATS on Tuesday arrested the man, Mujawar Barkat Shaikh, along with his associate, Babulal alias Pappu (23), from a village near Kolkata. Shaikh, booked for rape and extortion, and Pappu, arrested for aiding and abetting Shaikh in making extortion calls, will be produced in court on Wednesday.
According to the police, the woman (23) from south Mumbai and Shaikh—she met him back in school—were in a relationship. Shaikh owns a shop of web-cameras and CCTV cameras and he also runs the business of installing the gadgets in schools and private firms.
A few months ago, the woman broke up with Shaikh and started having an affair with another man. "The new boyfriend was in urgent need of money and he asked the woman to help him. Though she had broken up with Shaikh, she was still in touch with him," a source said. "She asked Shaikh to lend her Rs 10,000. He did give her the amount but set a condition that the money be repaid in a month's time."
But the new boyfriend failed to return the amount and Shaikh started pressuring the woman. When Shaikh did not get his money back even after a few months later, he reportedly called the woman over to his shop near CST. "Shaikh told her that if she would get intimate with him, he would forget about the amount," said an officer. "The woman complied, but she was unaware that their act was being video recorded on a camera Shaikh had hidden somewhere." A few weeks later, Shaikh again started demanding the money; fed up with the harassment, the woman returned the entire amount to him. "But Shaikh had a different plan up his sleeves. He told the woman that she must pay him Rs 15 lakh or else, he would upload the video record of their intimate moments on the net," said an officer.
Traumatized by the blackmailing, the woman, along with her woman, approached additional commissioner of police (south) Krishna Prakash. "The woman told us that she was so scared that could not sleep for several nights," Prakash said. "I formed a special team of six policemen to nab the culprit."
Getting a whiff that the police were searching for him, Shaikh escaped to a village in West Bengal, but he continued to threaten the woman over phone. "We took the ATS' help to locate his mobile tower location. He, along with his accomplice Pappu, was arrested from Bengal. At Shaikh's behest, Pappu had also called up the victim, asking for money. We have seized their mobile phones, the camera where the act was recorded and the video clip," said the police.
