LUCKNOW: In a chilling reminder to the deteriorating law and order condition in the city and vanishing fear of police, a jilted lover attacked a teenage girl with sharp-edged weapon in the broad daylight in Gomtinagar. The 17-year-old victim was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where she died during the treatment. The assailant was overpowered by the local people and handed over to police.

On Monday morning, the victim Komal along with her elder sister Mohini (19) was walking up to a local photo studio in Vishal Khand area. The sisters have been staying with their mother and elder brother Ravi in a rented accommodation in Digdiga area of Gomtinagar. Their father stays in Gonda, the native place of the family and works as a domestic help. Mohini had passed out of school and was exploring options for higher studies. Komal had just had appeared for her class X exam this year from a school in Narhi area. Her mother asked her to get passport size photograph taken as it was required while filling up forms for various institutes offering higher studies.

The sisters left their residence around 10.15am and went to a photo studio located in the neighbourhood near Shankar Chauraha (prominent intersection bordering Vishal Khand and Vikas Khand between Gomtinagar police station crossing and Dayal Paradise roundabout).

Assailant Kamal Tiwari (20) was known to the younger sister and was following the duo. She had been avoiding Tiwari for the past two weeks, an inconsolable Mohini told TOI outside the hospital ward where her sister passed away later. Tiwari, a contractual painter had taken a room on rent in the neighbourhood six months back, Ravi said. Tiwari stayed in the same block as the girl and the two became friends. When Komal's family raised objections, she started avoiding Tiwari.

He tried to confront her on various occasions but was not able to convince her. On Monday, he decided to attack the girl, said Vidyasagar Mishra, circle official of Gomtinagar police. "Tiwari wanted to marry the girl but she had asked for more time to come to a decision due to family pressure," added Mishra.

Tiwari confronted her near the photo studio and she told him in clear words to lay off. He was carrying the chopper and struck on her neck with it. She started bleeding profusely and collapsed on the road within moments. The locals overpowered Tiwari and informed the Gomtinagar police about the incident.

The injured girl was rushed to Lohia hospital and admitted to the emergency ward for treatment but the wound being lethal, she died within two hours of the incident. Police registered a case against Tiwari under murder charges at the behest of the elder sister, an eyewitness of the incident.
