NEW DELHI: The mysterious death of a class 12 girl, whose body was found in the rented room of her male friend, sparked violent protests in Mangolpuri, west Delhi, bringing the area to a standstill for several hours on Friday morning.

At least two DTC buses were damaged by a mob that laid siege outside the Mangolpuri police station, and pelted stones on the cops. Normalcy was restored around 11am. Minor skirmishes were reported in the evening too but the police denied any fresh rounds of protests had taken place.

Cops have stepped up security in the area. While there's anger against alleged police inaction, there's also tension within the locality. Families of both the girl and boy live in the area and belong to different communities. Several men have been detained and police were in the process of registering a rioting case late Friday evening.

Police said the 17-year-old girl, who studies at Mongolpuri's government girls' school, went missing after she left for school around 7am on Thursday. When she did not return till 1am, the family started looking for her.

"The girl's parents came to the police station around 6.30pm and we had filed a missing complaint by 7.10 pm. Around 8 pm, we received another call from the girl's friend saying she had hanged herself at his rented accommodation in the sector 3 Rohini. This friend showed us a suicide note. Blood was trickling from the girl's nose and mouth. It seems most likely a case of suicide," said additional DCP (outer) M A Rizvi.

However, the family rejects the police version. "The cops are lying. We reached the police station around 3pm. The cops took four hours to register the case. We were told the girl had cuts on her hand and was bleeding. This is a case of murder and not suicide," said the victim's father, a driver with a Rajendra Nagar-based businessman.

Police said the call from the girl's friend came around 8pm. A police team found the body lying on the floor. The victim's friend, 19-year-old Arif who is a tutor and part-time property dealer, has been arrested and booked under IPC sections of kidnapping and rape, and relevant sections of the law against child sexual offences ( POCSO).

The boy reportedly told investigators that the girl had come to meet him at his room. Later he went out, leaving the girl in the room. When he returned, he found her hanging from the ceiling fan, Arif told the cops. The girl's letter, he claimed, spoke extensively of how she knew him, that she wanted to tell him something and that he left in a hurry. Rizvi said they were consulting handwriting experts to ascertain the authenticity of the letter.

The youth said he brought down the body, laid it on the floor and informed the police. "The girl might have committed suicide. We are waiting for the report of post-mortem examination before further investigations," an officer said.

Police said Arif had rented the room in Rohini a few months back and became friends with the girl after she approached him for tuitions.
