BELGAUM: A five-year-old girl who was kidnapped from her home at Lakshminagar in Gokak taluk was found murdered on Tuesday a few hours later. After slitting her throat, the culprits wrapped her body in a gunny bag and threw it in a farm at Lakshminagar. Mudaligi policehave arrested Shivabodh Vasanth, 30.
According to Mudaligi police, Thasmiya (in pic) was kidnapped from her home between 1am and 2am on Monday. Because it was hot indoors, Thasmiya had slept out in the open with her grandparents. The culprits took Thasmiya away after threatening her grandparents.
The culprits left behind a contact number and a note demanding Rs 10 lakh as ransom. The note threatened to sell one of Thasmiya's kidneys if the ransom was not paid within five hours.
In his complaint, Thasmiya's father, Malik Sab Chand Khan, said he called the abductors and told them he was poor and unable to pay Rs 10 lakh; he offered them Rs 1 lakh instead.
Based on the calls made to Thasmiya's parents, police tracked the location of the accused and arrested Vasanth. They booked him under IPC's Sections 364 A (kidnap) and 302 (murder).
Police said that the accused confessed to having killed the girl. They have recovered the body.
SP Sandeep Patil said: "The kidnappers murdered the girl for ransom. Within a few hours of the kidnapping, our staff were successful in tracing the location of the accused. The accused will be produced before a court.''
Villagers livid
There was tension in the village as more than 500 people gathered before the Mudaligi police station demanding that the police hand over the accused to them. Police had to resort to a lathicharge and fire a few rounds of teargas to disperse the crowd.
