NAGPUR: A college professor was shot dead early on Wednesday by a man who stalked his daughter in Maharashtra, police said. The accused was arrested.
Anwar Khan killed Yogesh Dakhore and critically injured his wife Kusum around 3am in Nagpur's Hudkeshwar area, police said.
Khan used to stalk Dakhore's 24-year-old daughter, an M Tech student, and wanted her to accept his proposal for friendship, police said.
According to Dakhore's neighbours, his daughter along with her two elder brothers registered a police complaint in February about harassment by Khan.
Khan was questioned and let off by police, they alleged.
Police said Khan entered Dakhore's house from the terrace, went to the first floor and shot him with a home-made firearm, police said.
"He attacked Dakhore's wife with a knife and bludgeoned her with an iron rod," an official said.
"Kusum is under critical medical care and has got over 150 stitches on her head," the official added.
Khan also took Dakhore's daughter to the terrace and threatened to push her off if she did not accept her friendship proposal, police said.
Neighbours later overpowered Khan and handed him over to police, an official said.
A court sent the accused to police custody till April 8, he said.
