DHARMAPURI: Tension prevailed for more than two hours at the Dharmapuri central bus stand on Monday afternoon after a 22-year-old woman was killed by a man who claimed to love her. The culprit had proposed to her and when she rejected it, he slit her throat with a knife.
The deceased has been identified as M Sathiya, daughter of V Mathappan from Mallapuram near Indur in Dharmapuri district. According to Dharmapuri town police, the incident took place at the Dharmapuri central bus stand where more than 500 people witnessed the murder. "On Monday afternoon, a government special bus operating between Dharmapuri and Metter arrived at the central bus stand. Bus driver S Vel Murugan and conductor M Venkatachalam parked the bus in the parking bay and had gone to their office to post a sign for the next trip," said R Arasu, DSP, Dharmapuri town division.
Sathiya had just boarded the bus. A few minutes later, the accused M Kamaraj (22), son of P Madhappan also from Mallapuram boarded the bus. "From the moment he entered the bus, Kamaraj pestered Sathiya to accept his proposal, but she refused to do so," the DSP said. Enraged, Kamaraj stabbed Sathiya on her forehead. Sathiya immediately raised an alarm and passengers in the area began running towards the cries for help. However, before anyone could help, Kamaraj slit her throat and stabbed her on her chest and neck. Sathiya died on the spot, the DSP said.
Kamaraj tried to escape, but in vain. More than 200 passengers surrounded him and managed to tie his hands. Some passengers seized the knife from his hands. Soon after, they informedDharmapuri town police who rushed to the spot immediately. "We rushed to the central bus stand and recovered Sathiya's body and sent it to Dharmapuri government hospital for post-mortem. We have arrested the accused, produced him before the Dharmapuri district Judicial Magistrate and remanded him under judicial custody," Arasu said.
