Aug 30, 2012: Alert taxi driver foils husband’s bid to sell wife

TNN | Aug 30, 2012, 04.01AM IST
KOLKATA: An alert cabbie claimed to have saved a woman from being sold in a brothel, allegedly by her husband, on Wednesday. Police are interrogating the woman, her husband and mother at the Hare Street police station. However, the officials are in a dilemma after the bride's mother came and rescued her son-in-law, saying that he cannot even think of doing such a thing.

Sources said the couple reached Howrah station from their Hooghly home on Wednesday morning and boarded a shuttle taxi. While the girl sat on the rear seat, the husband, later identified as Shyamal Soren, sat on the front seat. Two more passengers were also in the taxi.

As the taxi was moving along the Howrah Bridge, Soren allegedly whispered into the cabbie's ears, saying: "Where can girls be sold here?" The cabbie, Dipu Malik, reportedly said that it would take Rs 250 to reach there. "Soren agreed to pay the sum. Two other passengers got down from the taxi at Shakespeare Sarani. The cabbie first took them to Dorina Crossing, where he found an outdoor broadcasting (OB) van of a news channel. But he found none in the OB van. Then he took the couple near the Writers' Buildings," said sources.

The cabbie then raised an alarm and the police personnel on duty there came rushing. On the basis of the complaint by the cabbie, the couple was taken to the officer-in-charge of Writers' Buildings. Later, Hare Street police station was informed. The couple and the cabbie were taken to the police station, said an officer.

Interrogation revealed that the couple, who got married only three months ago, was coming from Chanditala in Hooghly. Both of them used to work there. On Wednesday morning, Soren and his wife had left for Howrah en-route to Gangarampur, where Soren's family members live. From Howrah, the couple was supposed to go to Sealdah station and from there they were to board a Gangarampur-bound train.

The mother of the woman also reached the police station after being informed by the officials. But at Hare Street police station, she gave a different opinion about her son-in-law. She said Soren could not do something like that. The cabbie must have misunderstood his words. According to police, the cabbie stood by his statement. Soren, on the other hand, pleaded ignorance. Police will interrogate him again.

BIHARSHARIF: A school teacher in his 50s who not only commanded the respect of parents of children who went to his school but also of the entire neighborhood for his good behavior was assaulted by the same people and handed over to police on Tuesday evening when a girl of the locality, who returned home 12 years after she went missing, threw a bombshell that the revered teacher had abducted her and sold her to a brothel owner at Muzaffarpur. She went missing at the tender age of 9.
Daughter of poor parents, Puja Kumari (name changed) had gone missing from Malahbigha locality of Islampur town in Nalanda district some 12 years ago when she was barely 9. The poor parents frantically searched for their daughter but to no avail. They, then, lodged a 'missing' complaint of the minor girl with Islampur PS but with the passage of time, they lost all hope of their daughter ever returning home.
Luck turned for them two days ago when two days back, a young man who identified himself as Manoj Sah from Muzaffarpur visited the unfortunate parents and took them for the identification of the girl who, he said, claimed to be their daughter. The parents did not believe their eyes when they found their daughter alive after so many years.
Puja told the police she was abducted by a teacher of a primary school of the locality, Qasim Ahmad, who kept her confined in a house in Nabinagar village under Ekangarsarai PS area of Nalanda district for two months before selling her in the red light area in Muzaffarpur where she was physically and emotionally exploited for years. She claimed to have married the informant of her parents, Manoj Sah, some three years ago and had a child from him who, she said, is in the teacher's custody. She has also named the teacher's wife, Chanda Khatoon, their daughter Rehana and son-in-law Munna Mian as having conspired for taking her child.
The other accused have not been arrested as the police said it is a matter of investigation but the disgraced teacher was sent to judicial custody on Wednesday.

In yet another incident of bias against girl child, a newborn was found partially buried in an agriculture farm in Pawata village on city outskirts on Thursday. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared out of danger. Doctors said she was born less then seven hours before she was spotted by a villager. The police have lodged an FIR against unidentified parents. The police were informed about the infant about 6 pm on Thursday. "A woman was working in an agriculture field between Pawata and Pragpura villages when she heard the feeble cries of a child. She went to the spot and found a girl wrapped in a piece of cloth," a police officer said.

The woman told the police that some sand had been sprinkled on the girl's clothes to make her less visible from distance. The police rushed the girl to a primary health centre in Kotputli and later shifted her to a shelter home in Jaipur.

Aug 11, 2012: Girl gang-raped by 8 men, dumped near Agra highway

, TNN | Aug 11, 2012, 02.43AM IST
NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman employed with the Delhi Jal Board was allegedly gang-raped by an acquaintance and at least seven of his friends through Thursday night and dumped near the Ballabhgarh flyover on the Delhi-Agra highway. The victim managed to call the control room immediately and on the basis of the car number she recalled, a youth has been detained.

The main accused, however, are still at large, triggering allegations by the victim's family that they were being protected due to their political connections in the region. A case has been registered under sections 376 G (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) at the sector 55 police station.

According to the girl's complaint, the acquaintance, Inderjeet, had asked her to meet him to sort out a quarrel between him and his girlfriend. The victim said she knew Inderjeet's girlfriend from Ballabhgarh where she lived until recently and the latter had confided in her about her relationship. The victim has moved to Badarpur in Delhi since.

"On Thursday, Inderjeet called up the victim and asked her to mediate between him and her friend, saying they were facing problems in their relationship. The victim received the call at 8pm and she was asked to meet him near the Britannia factory close to Jharsaitali village. When the girl arrived at the spot, she found Inderjeet standing with his Santro along with several friends. They abducted the girl in the car," says the FIR, a copy of which is with TOI.

The accused, Inderjeet, lives in Jharsaitali village, near sector 55.

While Inderjeet and three of his friends - identified as Lukka, Navin and Santu - were in a Santro, the others followed in a Nano and a Skoda. The cars stopped at a barren field off the Agra-Delhi highway near Jharsaitali village and Inderjeet and his friends took turns raping her. The family alleged that she was raped in the moving car too. The FIR says the girl was made to gulp down alcohol as the ordeal continued well past midnight. Around 1.50am, the accused forced her into the Nano and dropped her near the Ballabhgarh flyover. The girl contacted the police control room at 1.55am.

The police claimed they immediately set up police barricades across Faridabad based on the girl's description of the car. The victim could remember only the last digits of the Santro but remembered the Nano's registration number in full. "We immediately located the Nano and have picked up a youth for questioning," said a senior police officer. There were allegations, though, that the police allowed media personnel to freely photograph the traumatized rape victim as she accompanied them to identify the vehicle.

Police said the victim was medically examined and rape was confirmed. Officers said they would be taking the statements of the girl's friend soon.

Police have been raiding several places in Ballabgarh, Faridabad and Delhi but have not been able to arrest any one of the key accused so far. The victim's family alleged that the youths had political clout in the region and were being protected. Top Faridabad police officials said as of Friday evening, five teams were on the lookout for the accused.

Aug 09, 2012: 7-year-old raped, killed

, TNN | Aug 9, 2012, 02.48AM IST
BURNPUR: Bengal's dubious distinction as an unsafe state for women hit a new low on Wednesday when a seven-year-old was found raped and murdered in Burnpur, barely 400 metres from her school. Her little things — shoes, pencil box and a question paper — were strewn about the body, along with empty bottles of liquor.

Puspa Thakur, a Class-II student of Burnpur Girls' High School, had been missing since Tuesday morning. Around 9am on Wednesday a rag-picker girl found her body, with the throat slit, in a drain behind the Iisco Steel Plant (ISP) quarters on Hospital Road.

The girl informed the locals of Nabaghanti who immediately went on the rampage at the school and ransacked at least four classrooms. The mob demanded that the ISP management visit the spot at once and alleged that the area turns into anti-socials' den after dark every day. These criminals allegedly occupy the unused quarters of ISP. Police had to lathicharge to disperse the mob and in retaliation, the mob hurled stones on the policemen.

The mob got even more violent after the girl's post-mortem report arrived from the Asansol subdivisional hospital. It revealed 11 injuries on the girl's body and mentioned that she had been killed after being raped. As the body was brought from the hospital, thousands of men and women gheraoed Hirapur police station, demanding that the guilty be arrested.

Police had to lathi-charge again to clear the mob. But the agitators had by then closed down shops and stopped bus services.

The local police brought a sniffer dog from the RPF in the afternoon, but it failed to give any leads. Subrata Ganguly, the ADCP (West) of Asansol-Durgapur Police, said probe has been started. "We have asked the agitators for 24 hours to arrest the culprits," he said. No arrests have been made yet.

Aug 09, 2012: Man kills wife following 'tiff over sex', given 10 yrs in jail

PTI | Aug 7, 2012, 07.29PM IST
NEW DELHI: A man, who stabbed his wife to death following a tiff over her alleged denial of conjugal bliss to him, has been sentenced to 10 years in a jail by a Delhi court.

Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Sanjeev Kumar ordered jail term for 31-year-old Outer Delhi resident Amarjeet after holding him guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, saying that he had no "premeditated intention" to kill her.

The court convicted him rejecting his pleas that he and his wife had quarrelled over the issue of sexual intercourse and she had stabbed herself. The court, however, showed leniency to him in awarding the jail term saying he has a three-year-old son to look after.

"Convict has stabbed his wife and caused her death, but he has one child to look after. Therefore, in the facts and circumstances of the case, in my view, punishment for 10 years rigorous imprisonment would be sufficient to meet the end of justice," the judge said, while also imposing a fine of Rs 5,000 on convict.

The prosecution case dated back to May 12, 2011 when Amarjeet, a labourer, forced his wife Chhoti Devi, sleeping with their son on the roof of their house, to come downstairs. The couple ended up having a fight downstairs, following which Amarjeet stabbed her once and fled from there.

The woman was found dead next morning with her son crying nearby, the police told the court.

"From the evidence produced, it is not proved that, accused has any premeditated intention to cause the death of his wife. It appears that due to sudden quarrel between the accused and the deceased, he became infuriated and within spur of moment he had stabbed the deceased from a knife which may be lying in the said room.

"Circumstances suggest he may have intention to injure her but he has no intention to kill her, otherwise, he would have given multiple blows which is not the case," the court said.

Additional sessions judge T R Naval allowed framing of charges against Jamal Nasir for rape, abetment to suicide, concealment of former marriage, fraudulent marriage and cohabitation by inducing a belief of lawful marriage. Jamal, a resident of east Delhi, ran a cloth factory in front of the victim's house. He had allegedly approached the girl and asked her to marry him. He maintained he was a bachelor. According to the prosecution, in June 2001, Jamal called the girl inside the factory, where four other people were also present. One of them was introduced as Qazi and other three as witnesses. Jamal told her that after some recitations from the Quran, she would be converted to Islam and thereafter, they would be married.

They then started living as man and wife. It was only when the girl asked him why he did not spend the nights at home that he disclosed his former marriage. But, she made a compromise and continued to live with Jamal.

In July 2006, Jamal's first wife came at their house and beat her up. Later, Jamal shifted her to another house and even asked her to stay away from him. The girl went into depression and tried to kill herself, but was saved due to timely medical aid.

After being discharged from the hospital, she lodged a complaint saying Jamal, his first wife Musharrat, his brother Anees and his wife Nilofar were responsible for making her end her life.

Jul 31, 2012: Girl child abandoned at temple in Rajasthan

, TNN | Jul 31, 2012, 09.01PM IST
JAIPUR: A one-year old was abandoned at the doorstep of a temple in Ajmer town on Monday evening. The girl was admitted to a hospital, police said. An FIR has been registered against unidentified parents for abandoning the child.
According to the police, the priest of Shiva Temple situated at Subhash Garden in Ajmer heard some dogs barking.
"He rushed outside and saw a girl lying on the temple's threshold. She was surrounded by some dogs. The priest informed the police following which she was rushed to a hospital," a police officer said.
He added, "the girl is mentally challenged as per the doctors. It could be the reason behind the parents abandoning the girl. The girl would have fallen prey to the dogs if the priest had not spotted her on time. We have registered a case and are trying to trace the parents," said the officer.
Several cases of girl children being abandoned has been reported in the state.
Coming down heavily on the police, the Rajasthan high court had recently asked the cops to make more efforts in tracing the parents who are involved in female infanticide or foeticide. The court had even said that the station house officers of the police stations who fail to trace these parents should be removed.

Jul 31, 2012: Moral policing: Girl suffers hearing loss

, TNN | Jul 31, 2012, 08.50PM IST
MANGALORE: No doubt the attack by moral vigilantes scarred the victims physically and emotionally, especially the girls. The attack has been so severe that one of the girl's ear drums has been perforated.
The visual footage of Saturday's incident shows that a girl being slapped hard on her left side of the head by a goon. The slap was so hard that the girl, who fell down on the bed, was lying and writhing in pain.

After she returned home, the girl had complained of buzzing in her ear and the parents had not given so much attention, because they were also under stress after the incident. The next day when she was taken to a doctor by a relative, the doctor said her ear drum had been perforated because of the trauma.

The parent, on condition of anonymity, said: Yes, she had suffered trauma and it has been diagnosed as ear perforation. Regarding whether he will lodge a complaint, he said: when it comes to investigation, my daughter will cooperate with the investigating officers. We will not file a separate complaint.''

Interestingly, the girl was not in a mood to go for her friend Rekha's (name changed) birthday party as she had severe bout of migraine. But her mother forced her saying that it was not proper not to attend Rekha's birthday celebrations, as she had come for her birthday and also given her a gift. The parent also confirmed this. We are not blaming her. She has gone to the college today. It will take some time for us to come out of the trauma,'' he said.

On the day of the incident, the family was in a state of shock. The family did not sleep for two days,'' a source said. When they girl returned home, blood was seen coming out of the ears. The mother keeps on telling all that it is her fault that she forced her daughter to go to the party. Father was looking weak on the day, now he has mustered courage to put on a brave face,'' the source added.
ENT specialist Dr Thahir Mohammed, who treated her, said: The damage may take six months to heal and the hearing loss could be in range of 20%-30%. I have asked them to get an audiometry evaluation to assess to hearing loss. He also said the girl has to be careful about infection as it may lead to permanent hearing loss.

Jul 29, 2012: Woman raped by 3 men, sold thrice

Alka Panse, TNN | Jul 29, 2012, 12.38AM IST
NAGPUR: After being raped by three men in December last year and sold thrice in a span of three months earlier this year, 26-year-old Sangeeta (name changed), who is now six months pregnant, had given up all hopes of returning to normal life. However, Rajaram, her second buyer, who had paid Rs 2 lakhs, turned out to be a Good Samaritan as he brought her back to Nagpur from Ujjain, where she had been sold, and helped register a police complaint.
On Saturday, two days after Sangeeta had filed the complaint, the Lakadganj police arrested five people, including two women, on various charges. Another five have been booked in the case.
Shaikh Asif (27), Shaikh Ayub (32) and Shaikh Abid alias Abu (28), who is also Sangeeta's neighbour, have confessed to raping her. Nisha Verma (30) and Chandrakala Satpute (36), alias Chanda, admitted that they had lured Sangeeta with promises of marrying her off into an affluent family and then sold her. All the offenders are residents of Shanti Nagar slums, behind Itwari railway station, where Sangeeta too used to reside.
The case has once again brought to fore kidnapping and trafficking of girls from the city to other states for sexual exploitation. The police believe that the women are part of a gang that is into this shady business. Last month, a married woman was rescued from Rajkot where she had been sold for Rs1 lakh.
Sangeeta, a Std 10 pass, had been living in fear for the last three months in Ujjain. Rajaram took pity on Sangeeta on learning that she is pregnant. "He took me to a police station in Ujjain. Then, a constable and Rajaram accompanied me to Nagpur," Sangeeta told TOI, adding that she could not contact her family as the rapists had broken her cell phone, in her house.
The Lakadganj police have booked Rajaram, who has now returned to Ujjain, too for "buying" Sangeeta.
According to investigating officer DP Sonune, Sangeeta first came into contact with Chanda who then introduced her to Asif. Chanda would meet Sangeeta at the place where she worked as a domestic help.
"On December 26, Asif raped her near the Itwari railway crossing. He continued to abuse her for two weeks and later invited Ayub and Abid too. They too raped her separately," said Sonune.
After a month, Sangeeta learnt about her pregnancy and alerted Chanda who asked her not to reveal it to her parents. As Asif had threatened to kill her and her family, Sangeeta did not file a police complaint. Chanda assured Sangeeta all help to abort the baby.
"Following Chanda's suggestion, Sangeeta moved in with her in the first week of May. On May 20, Chanda handed her over to Shekhar (another accused) who took her to Ujjain and sold her," said Sonune. Sangeeta's family filed a missing complaint on May 20.
"I trusted Chanda like my elder sister but she betrayed me. A day before Shekhar took me to Ujjain on May 19, Chanda told me that she had found a good groom from a wealthy family for me," said Sangeeta. She also alleged that Chanda had mixed some drugs in her dinner before she boarded the train for Ujjain along with Shekhar and an unidentified woman who is supposed to be his girlfriend.
On May 22, Shekhar sold Sangeeta to one Devi Singh for Rs1.5 lakhs in Ujjain. Singh then sold her to Bhanu Singh for the same cost. Police said Bhanu Singh was not told about Sangeeta's pregnancy and hence married her on May 27.
Bhanu Singh 'raped' Sangeeta for two weeks and then handed her back to Devi Singh on learning about her pregnancy. Devi Singh then sold her to Rajaram for Rs2 lakhs.
Sangeeta now plans to give birth to the child and give it away for adoption.
Sonune said a team has been sent to Ujjain to nab Devi Singh, Bhanu Singh and Rajaram. The police are also on the lookout for Shekhar and his girlfriend.

Jul 28, 2012: More women now report about crimes on trains

George Adimathra, TNN Jul 27, 2012, 11.19PM IST
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There are more reported incidents of crime against women passengers during train journeys. This fact is verified by the number of complaints registered through the helpline numbers of government railway police (GRP) and railway protection force (RPF). However, senior officials of both forces said it didn't indicate an increase in the crime rate. More women come forward and register their complaints, particularly after the Soumya murder, they said.
In 2011, GRP registered 40 cases that include molestation and eve teasing, while till July 24, 2012 they have already registered 40 cases. Similar is the case with RPF 22 were registered in 2011, while this year 25 cases have been filed till July.
The RPF (9995040000) and GRP (9846200100) helplines are witnessing more calls since last year, officials said.
Southern Railway Thiruvananthapuram divisional security commissioner K J Joy said women passengers, who faced an issue, avoided legal procedures and related tangles. "This reluctance prevented many cases from getting reported and I believe that despite our efforts there are unfortunate incidents.
There are more registered cases now because women passengers want justice and we ensure it from our side. I am glad that families are supporting them, which is the need of the hour.
To avoid situations like last week - when the RPF personnel released an offender - we have instructed our men to follow rules stringently," Joy said. Echoing similar sentiments, GRP SP, Rajan John said that the significant increase is also due to the response and help both forces facilitate. "The smooth coordination we enjoy with RPF and local police help us to take up all requests, even pleas for medical help. However, absence of personnel is an impediment," Rajan said. Official said, GRP has 500 personnel in Kerala and RPF has close to 750.
But the force is insufficient argue officials. Meanwhile GRP has launched a new initiative titled 'Subhayathramangalam' under which passengers can register complaints with beat officers on trains and avail a copy of the complaint immediately.
Passenger need not go to police station to keep track of the case, they can get case procedure details through a telephone call.
Thiruvananthapuram: There are more reported incidents of crime against women passengers during train journey, reveals the complaints registered through the helpline numbers of government railway police (GRP) and railway protection force (RPF). However, senior officials of both these forces said it didn't indicate an increase in crime rate but only proves that more women now come forward to register their complaints, particularly after the Saumya murder.
In 2011, GRP registered 40 cases that include molestation and eve teasing, while in the year 2012 up to July 24, they have already registered 40 cases. Similar is the case with RPF which registered 22 cases of crime against women in 2011, but already filed 25 cases up to July 2012.
The RPF helpline 9995040000 and GRP's 9846200100 are witnessing an increase in calls since last year, officials said.
K J Joy, Southern Railway Thiruvananthapuram divisional security commissioner, said that previously women passengers who faced an issue had used to avoid legal procedures and related tangles. "That prevented many cases from getting reported and I believe that despite our efforts to remain vigil there are situations occurring when the modesty of a woman is outraged. The rise in cases registered is because women passengers now want justice and since we ensure that, they are coming forward. I am glad that their families are supporting them, which is the need of the hour. To avoid situations like last week when the RPF personnel released an offender we have instructed the force to follow rules stringently," Joy said.
Echoing this, GRP SP, Rajan John said that significant increase in response is result of both forces facilitating support for the passengers.
"The smooth coordination we have with RPF and local police are helping us to meet the demands and both our helplines are receiving pleas for even medical help. However absence of personnel is an impediment affecting both of us," Rajan pointed put.
While GRP just has 500 personnel for the state, RPF has close to 750 personnel, which according to officials are too low to meet the demands.
Meanwhile GRP has also launched 'Subhayathramangalam', a venture under which passengers can register complaints with beat officers on train and avail a copy of the complaint immediately. The scheme is to help passenger avoid going to police station and receive details on case procedure through telephone.
