Mumbai: After 25-year-old lawyer Pallavi Purkayastha was found dead with her throat slit in her rented flat in Mumbai's Wadala area, a security guard of her residential building has been arrested for the murder. Police sources say that the murder weapon has also been recovered.
The guard has reportedly told the police that he had an altercation with Ms Purkayastha a couple of days ago and was upset with her rude behaviour.
Police sources say that the guard was missing from work all day and was picked up from the Mumbai Central station. He was the last person seen visiting Ms Purkayastha's apartment, the sources said.
According to the police, Ms Purkayastha's body was discovered by her live-in partner on Thursday.
"Pallavi, daughter of an IAS couple in Delhi, was found in a pool of blood at her rented flat in 'Himalayan Heights' building by her live-in partner Avik Sengupta (26), also a lawyer," said Additional Police Commissioner Praveen Salunkhe.
"Pallavi's body has multiple stab injuries. The scene of crime indicates she struggled to save herself. When Avik returned home this morning at around 5:30 AM, he found that the door was slightly opened...he went inside and found the blood-soaked body of Pallavi with the throat slit, following which he informed the police," he added.
The body was taken to nearby Sion hospital for postmortem, police said, adding that some CCTVs installed in the building were not functional.
