Raniganj: A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in West Bengal's Raniganj on her way back from school leading to violent protests by locals who set three vehicles on fire and damaged at least 30 others, including one belonging to the police, demanding that two youths who were allegedly involved in the crime be handed to them.

Asansol-Durgapur Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda said police had to resort to lathicharge as the huge contingent of personnel and RAF that rushed to the site at Sastigoria could not contain the situation.

A police driver was injured in the violence, he said, adding eight people were arrested in connection with this and police picket was posted in the area in view of the tension.

Trouble started when the girl studying in class eight was allegedly taken to a nearby place and raped by two men while she was on her way back from school yesterday.

The girl reported the incident to her family after her return.

Following this, the family and its neighbors went to the local police station to file a complaint, which the police allegedly refused to entertain.

They then blockaded NH 60 from 11 pm to 3 am today in protest and stopped only after the t he two men were arrested today.

However, locals and the girl's family along with parents of other students indulged in violence on the highway demanding that the two be handed over to them or be given exemplary punishment. They also protested against alleged police inaction.

The girl underwent medical tests during the day, Police Commissioner Nanda added.

April 28, 2013: Rapes will come down if people shun meat, alcohol: Swami Agnivesh

Press Trust of India | Updated: April 28, 2013 01:07 IST
New DelhiRape cases will come down if people shun non-vegetarian food and alcohol, activist Swami Agnivesh said on Saturday.

"We cannot stop a crime like rape by policing only.... I think rapes will come down significantly if people stop eating non-vegetarian. There has been lot of research on this.... Rapes will come down significantly if alcohol consumption is not there," he told reporters in Delhi.

He said a lot of crimes and accidents take place due to the consumption of alcohol.

Arguing on the benefits of a vegetarian diet, he said Japanese scientists conducted a study on the oldest man on earth recently and they found that he was a vegetarian.

"Every research conducted in this world points to one fact that red meat is the reason behind all diseases," he said.

Mr Agnivesh said that all the six accused in the gruesome rape of a young girl in a moving bus in  December last year were drunk as well as the accused in the recent incident of sexual assault on a five-year-old girl.

"In both the incidents, the accused consumed alcohol. This explains clearly that alcohol drove them to commit the crime. Alcohol shuts down the moral thinking of a person," he said.

"Government is not ending alcohol-production in the country as it fetches revenue. All the states have now started competing to outnumber each other in alcohol production. This has become the norm," he said.

Expressing concern over the fact that every day one billion animals are slaughtered, he said that "its consequences will be severe."

Regretting the loss of values in people, Mr Agnivesh said, "There are no moral and spiritual values left in people. Schools today do not teach children about the evil-consequences of drinking. We cannot blame an individual for a crime. The society, as a whole, is responsible."

Asked about whether death penalty will stop rape, he said, "Death penalty will not do anything. I do not support it. Death sentence should not be given to anybody including those who attack Parliament. Even Kasab should not have been given death sentence."

AGRA: A 32-year-old man was arrested on Saturday in connection with the rape and murder of a seven-year-old girl, whose body was found at the house of a CRPF sub-inspector in Kachaura area here, police said.

Shailendra alias Chintu, who was arrested from Achhnera Road near the village where the incident took place, would be prosecuted under National Security Act along with murder and rape charges, SSP Agra Subhash Chandra Dubey said.

The victim was found lying in a pool of blood on the roof of the sub-inspector's house with wire marks around her neck and it seemed her head had been crushed with a stone, police said.

Victim's father, in his FIR, has alleged that Shailendra had asked the girl to come with him to help in some work while she was at the engagement ceremony, they said.

He raped the girl and then crushed her head with a stone causing her death, they said.

Locals informed that soon after the incident Shailendra and his family left the village in a truck with their belongings, police said.

Apr 27, 2013: Class XII girl’s death sparks violence in west Delhi

, TNN | Apr 27, 2013, 04.37 AM IST
NEW DELHI: The mysterious death of a class 12 girl, whose body was found in the rented room of her male friend, sparked violent protests in Mangolpuri, west Delhi, bringing the area to a standstill for several hours on Friday morning.

At least two DTC buses were damaged by a mob that laid siege outside the Mangolpuri police station, and pelted stones on the cops. Normalcy was restored around 11am. Minor skirmishes were reported in the evening too but the police denied any fresh rounds of protests had taken place.

Cops have stepped up security in the area. While there's anger against alleged police inaction, there's also tension within the locality. Families of both the girl and boy live in the area and belong to different communities. Several men have been detained and police were in the process of registering a rioting case late Friday evening.

Police said the 17-year-old girl, who studies at Mongolpuri's government girls' school, went missing after she left for school around 7am on Thursday. When she did not return till 1am, the family started looking for her.

"The girl's parents came to the police station around 6.30pm and we had filed a missing complaint by 7.10 pm. Around 8 pm, we received another call from the girl's friend saying she had hanged herself at his rented accommodation in the sector 3 Rohini. This friend showed us a suicide note. Blood was trickling from the girl's nose and mouth. It seems most likely a case of suicide," said additional DCP (outer) M A Rizvi.

However, the family rejects the police version. "The cops are lying. We reached the police station around 3pm. The cops took four hours to register the case. We were told the girl had cuts on her hand and was bleeding. This is a case of murder and not suicide," said the victim's father, a driver with a Rajendra Nagar-based businessman.

Police said the call from the girl's friend came around 8pm. A police team found the body lying on the floor. The victim's friend, 19-year-old Arif who is a tutor and part-time property dealer, has been arrested and booked under IPC sections of kidnapping and rape, and relevant sections of the law against child sexual offences ( POCSO).

The boy reportedly told investigators that the girl had come to meet him at his room. Later he went out, leaving the girl in the room. When he returned, he found her hanging from the ceiling fan, Arif told the cops. The girl's letter, he claimed, spoke extensively of how she knew him, that she wanted to tell him something and that he left in a hurry. Rizvi said they were consulting handwriting experts to ascertain the authenticity of the letter.

The youth said he brought down the body, laid it on the floor and informed the police. "The girl might have committed suicide. We are waiting for the report of post-mortem examination before further investigations," an officer said.

Police said Arif had rented the room in Rohini a few months back and became friends with the girl after she approached him for tuitions.

TNN | Apr 26, 2013, 04.49AM IST
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A college professor was on Thursday remanded in police custody a day after he was arrested for allegedly raping a student.

The Kottiyam Police identified the accused as K J Rajan of the Government Law College in Thiruvananthapuram.

The Elavumthitta, Pathanamthitta native was arrested from his residence in Kesavadasapuram here on Wednesday night, after the 23-year-old final year LLB student lodged a complaint with Kollam city police commissioner Debesh Kumar Behra two days ago.

The student alleged that the professor had been sexually exploiting her since October last. He allegedly offered the woman expert legal aid in a property dispute her live-in partner was involved in. She complained that the professor had also promised to marry her and also give high grades in exams.

The woman approached the police when she felt cheated when he allegedly went back on his promises. She reportedly told the police that the professor was involved in similar relationship with four other students also.

The Law College authorities, meanwhile, said they had not received any complaint from the student, or any other student, against the professor. "There is an Atrocity Against Women Cell in the college. Its members are unaware of the complaint,'' A Prasanna, who took charge as principal of the college on April 1, said. Former principal S Usha said she too had not received any complaint from the student.

The students of the college said the complainant had once brought her infant to the college and created a scene, asking the professor to own up the baby's paternity. The students, however, added that the professor was well behaved in the college, and was adept in the subjects which he taught.

A Paravoor court on Thursday remanded the professor in police custody till April 30.

GREATER NOIDA: A handicapped woman was gang-raped by her husband's friends in Dadri of Greater Noida five days ago, but the reluctant police only lodged an FIR after the incident came in media limelight. The accused had allegedly abducted the victim and then raped her. One accused has been arrested. In another incident, a woman was raped and then blackmailed on the basis of an MMS made by the accused. When cops did not register an FIR, the victim approached the court for help.

In the first incident, five days ago the wife of one Vivek Singh (name changed) was returning from the market after purchasing uniforms for her children to her house in Gagan Vihar colony, one of the accused offered her a lift. "As the accused was her husband's friend, she agreed. The accused then made an excuse and took her to his room, where the other accused was waiting," said a police officer. The accused then tied the woman's hands and legs with a rope and gang-raped her.

The first accused, Vijay, is a native of Badaun while Nizam is from Anoopshahr in Bulandshahr district. At the time of the incident, the victim's husband was out of town. After being released from the clutches of the accused, she went to the police station. However, instead of lodging an FIR and arresting the accused, cops started asking her awkward questions. An FIR was lodged when media intervened. Vijay has been arrested while Nizam is still at large.

In another incident, a man made an indecent MMS of a woman after finding her in a compromising position with another man on the roof of her house and started blackmailing her. The accused not only raped her but also threatened that if she did not pay him Rs 50,000, he would circulate the MMS. The victim's husband nabbed the accused and handed him over to the police, but he was released immediately. The family then moved court after which cops were asked to lodge an FIR and arrest the accused.

Apr 23, 2013: Teenage girl killed in full public view in Gomtinagar

TNN | Apr 23, 2013, 04.16AM IST
LUCKNOW: In a chilling reminder to the deteriorating law and order condition in the city and vanishing fear of police, a jilted lover attacked a teenage girl with sharp-edged weapon in the broad daylight in Gomtinagar. The 17-year-old victim was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where she died during the treatment. The assailant was overpowered by the local people and handed over to police.

On Monday morning, the victim Komal along with her elder sister Mohini (19) was walking up to a local photo studio in Vishal Khand area. The sisters have been staying with their mother and elder brother Ravi in a rented accommodation in Digdiga area of Gomtinagar. Their father stays in Gonda, the native place of the family and works as a domestic help. Mohini had passed out of school and was exploring options for higher studies. Komal had just had appeared for her class X exam this year from a school in Narhi area. Her mother asked her to get passport size photograph taken as it was required while filling up forms for various institutes offering higher studies.

The sisters left their residence around 10.15am and went to a photo studio located in the neighbourhood near Shankar Chauraha (prominent intersection bordering Vishal Khand and Vikas Khand between Gomtinagar police station crossing and Dayal Paradise roundabout).

Assailant Kamal Tiwari (20) was known to the younger sister and was following the duo. She had been avoiding Tiwari for the past two weeks, an inconsolable Mohini told TOI outside the hospital ward where her sister passed away later. Tiwari, a contractual painter had taken a room on rent in the neighbourhood six months back, Ravi said. Tiwari stayed in the same block as the girl and the two became friends. When Komal's family raised objections, she started avoiding Tiwari.

He tried to confront her on various occasions but was not able to convince her. On Monday, he decided to attack the girl, said Vidyasagar Mishra, circle official of Gomtinagar police. "Tiwari wanted to marry the girl but she had asked for more time to come to a decision due to family pressure," added Mishra.

Tiwari confronted her near the photo studio and she told him in clear words to lay off. He was carrying the chopper and struck on her neck with it. She started bleeding profusely and collapsed on the road within moments. The locals overpowered Tiwari and informed the Gomtinagar police about the incident.

The injured girl was rushed to Lohia hospital and admitted to the emergency ward for treatment but the wound being lethal, she died within two hours of the incident. Police registered a case against Tiwari under murder charges at the behest of the elder sister, an eyewitness of the incident.
