SURAT: A 55-year-old woman was branded a 'witch' and murdered by her nephew at Vagheshwar village of Mahuva taluka in Surat on Sunday night. The 35-year-old accused Arjun Halpati, who was arrested on Monday, told police that he could see spirits in her eyes.

Shanta Halpati was returning home at Kahar Faliya in the village at 8 pm after purchasing milk when the accused hit her with a stick. When she fell on the ground, Arjun slit her throat with a sickle.

Shanta died on way to hospital in Navsari in the presence of her son and daughter. The accused during his questioning told police that he had killed Shanta as he believed she was doing black magic on him.

"Arjun was depressed for he was ill for 20 years. He believed he remained sick because of his aunt Shanta. The accused was of the view that the deceased had made him ill through her witchcraft," said R L Parghi, police sub inspector, Mahuva police station.

Arjun, a labourer who had studied up to class VI, claimed he could see spirits in Shanta's eyes. He said he had asked her not to do witchcraft on him.

Shanta and her family are farm labourers. Relatives and neighbours told police that the deceased was not involved in any witchcraft. The deceased and the accused stayed close by at Kahar Faliya.
