THENI: A class 10 student was allegedly raped and murdered by her relative in Theni district who buried the body in the foothills of the western ghats.
The girl went missing on April 1 and was murdered the same day, but police zeroed in on the accused R Veerapandi, 24, only on Friday and arrested him. The body of the girl was exhumed and sent to postmortem hours after Veerapandi showed the buried spot to police.
Police said that Veerapandi from Palakombai village near Andipatti had developed an affair with the girl Sathya (name changed) from the same village three months back. But the family of Veerapandi made arrangements for his marriage with another girl. When Sathya learnt about Veerapandi's wedding plans, she picked up a quarrel with him and insisted that he marry her, police said.
"On April 1, the girl went to the school to appear for the board exams. After the school, Veerapandi took her to an isolated place along the foot hills of western ghats at Avaramkurichi near Palakombai village. He raped her, then stabbed her to death with a knife. He later bundled the body into a jute sack and buried her in a pit," police said.
Sathya's parents, who panicked after she failed to return home till late in the night launched a search for her. They continued their search the next day in her friends and relatives' house. As the search turned futile, they lodged a complaint with the police.
On learning about the affair between Veerapandi and Sathya during the course of the investigation, police picked up Veerapandi for inquiry on suspicion. "During inquiry, he admitted to have murdered the girl. He wanted to eliminate the girl as she would pose a problem for his marriage," police said. Police said that Veerapandi's family was also aware of their affair and had opposed it.
A team of officials from the police and revenue department visited the spot where the body was buried and exhumed it in a highly decomposed state. The body has been sent for postmortem to Theni government hospital. Meanwhile, Veerapandi was produced before a judicial magistrateand remanded.
