MUMBAI: Upset that his marriage was being delayed, a 21-year-old youth murdered his fiancee at her home in Vasai and later hanged himself at his Dahanu house, early on Friday.
Chandu Boge (21), a resident of Vangaon in Dahanu, was engaged to Geeta Hadal (20), of Kaman village in Vasai (east) since 2009. Geeta's father Suresh (40) had been delaying the marriage due to financial constraints, the police said. "Chandu worked as a labourer in a brick-making unit. Suresh wanted Chandu to improve his financial position before he got his daughter married off. Both belonged to the tribal community," said a senior police officer.
Chandu wanted Geeta to convince her father to advance the marriage. After much persuasion, Suresh agreed to get them married in April 2012. However, when Chandu met Geeta at her home in Vasai on Thursday,
Suresh expressed his displeasure again over the marriage date. Chandu got into a fight with Suresh and even accused him of looking out for another groom for his daughter.
Later, Chandu told Geeta to meet him in the vicinity of her house. Chandu accused her of having relations with other men, and hence backing off the marriage the police said. Then he smashed her head with a stone and left Geeta's body near a tree. Chandu then returned home in Dahanu and hanged himself. He did not leave behind a suicide note.
